What happened to Gizmo?
Gizmo became known after fishing line cut into his dorsal fin in 2012. He was eventually freed in a multi-agency rescue, but was reported dead in 2015. The first account of his death described a preliminary finding, not a confirmed diagnosis; a later parliamentary account gave a more definitive retrospective description of the infection.

What was reported as the cause of death?
The contemporaneous 2015 report said the preliminary necropsy suggested chronic infection causing tissue damage, but the diagnosis remained unproven while tests were pending. In 2016, a parliamentary account said autopsy results showed a deep, chronic infection and ruled out water contamination as the cause. The primary pathology report is not available in these accounts, so they do not establish the infection’s specific organism, location or mechanism.
Did the fishing-line injury cause his death?
The sources document Gizmo’s serious dorsal-fin wound as a calf and a later infection finding. They do not provide a clinical conclusion linking the wound to that infection or his death. It is therefore not established that the fishing line caused his death.

Was his death linked to the 2009 dolphin deaths?
The 2015 article quoted a department spokesperson saying there was no apparent connection between Gizmo’s death and the six Swan River dolphin deaths in 2009. Those earlier deaths had been associated in subsequent testing with naturally occurring morbillivirus. The claimed lack of connection is the department’s assessment as reported at the time.
Why Gizmo’s story matters beyond one dolphin
The Swan-Canning dolphins live in an urban estuary. The Dolphin Watch annual report lists population-level pressures that include rapid salinity changes, habitat loss, decreasing prey, fishing-line entanglement, boat strikes, rubbish and noise. These are broader risks, not established causes of Gizmo’s death.

Gizmo’s rescue also drew attention to discarded fishing line. A Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions LANDSCOPE article says his case helped prompt the Reel it in fishing-line collection-bin pilot. The article reports that the two-year pilot collected more than 15,000 metres of line and 5,000 pieces of other tackle and bait bags. It also describes a later period with 61 dedicated bins and reported collections of 50 kilometres of line, 7,600 hooks and sinkers, 6,600 bait bags and 18,000 pieces of general rubbish. These are historical program figures; the article extract does not show its publication year, and they should not be read as current totals. DBCA LANDSCOPE: “Reel it in”.

How to reduce the risk from discarded fishing line
- Keep used line and tackle contained rather than leaving them on a riverbank or pier.
- Use a fishing-line collection bin where one is available; otherwise, dispose of line safely in a suitable rubbish receptacle so wildlife cannot become entangled in it.
