Lights Out, Texas! asks residents and building operators to dim or switch off nonessential nighttime lighting during migration, helping reduce a source of disorientation and collision risk. Keep lighting needed for safety, and check current campaign guidance for this year’s dates; the widely repeated peak window of April 22–May 12 was for 2024, not a verified 2026 schedule.
What the “avian superhighway” means
Texas lies along the Central Flyway, a major route used by migrating birds. A 2024 report citing Texas Parks and Wildlife figures said nearly two billion birds, representing around 400 species, cross the state each spring. That is the estimate reported for the story, not a freshly verified count for every year.
Many migratory birds travel at night. The same 2024 report put the share of North American migratory birds that are nocturnal at about 70%. Their passage can be difficult to see from the ground, but artificial light in cities may interfere with it.
Why nighttime lights can put birds at risk
Artificial urban lighting can disorient nocturnally migrating birds and may draw them toward built-up areas. Once near buildings, birds face hazards including glass: a window can reflect trees or sky, or appear invisible, rather than look like a barrier. Texas Parks and Wildlife ornithologist Tania Homayoun explained that birds do not innately recognize the cues humans use to identify a window or glass door. Scientists do not know every detail of how light affects migration, so the mechanism should not be treated as fully settled.

- Designed to be applied to exterior glass surfaces. Before application, ensure that your surface is thoroughly clean and free of any overlay, tinting, film, coating or other impurities.
- WindowAlert is the trusted source for prevention of bird window strikes and window collisions. WindowAlert first developed and pioneered ultraviolet window decals in Bend, Oregon in 2003. Decals are made in the USA.
Building collisions are a substantial conservation problem in the United States, but the numbers are estimates, not a direct count of every bird killed each year. A 2024 Dallas Morning News report cited an estimated range of 388 million to 965 million annual U.S. bird deaths from building collisions.
What Lights Out, Texas! asks people to do
The campaign’s practical request is to reduce nonessential nighttime light during migration. That means turning off or dimming lights that are not needed, rather than switching off lighting required for life safety.

- Anti collision bird stickers decal prevent birds and people strikes.
- Made of PVC, doing a good job of keeping your furry flying friends from crashing into the picture windows!
- Easy to install, post to the window/door. Peel it off, stick it on, done! We recommend to put decals to outside of the window, but in case, if can not reach the dangerous outside of window, you can stick it inside, the effect may be influence a bit.
- Reduce your feathered friends accidents and prevents breakage.
- It is a long-lasting self-adhesive backing that fit for smooth surface glass doors and windows.
- Turn off or dim nonessential outdoor and decorative lights.
- Reduce unnecessary sign and building lighting during migration nights.
- Keep safety lighting where it is needed.
- Check current Lights Out, Texas! materials or local alerts for the applicable dates and recommendations.
A 2021 account by the Texas Conservation Alliance, published by the National Wildlife Federation, recommended dimming nonessential lights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. during the broadly identified peak months of September, October, April and May. This is dated campaign guidance, not a universal rule or confirmation of the current 2026 schedule. Local initiatives can set different schedules. The article’s April 22–May 12 peak window referred specifically to spring 2024.
Lights and windows are two different interventions
Reducing lighting addresses one potential cause of disorientation; treating glass addresses collision risk at the building itself. One measure does not replace the other. The evidence cited for window changes comes from particular buildings, not from every home or consumer product.

| Action | When and who can act | What the cited evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Dim or switch off nonessential lights | Seasonally, at night; residents and building operators can take part while retaining necessary safety lighting. | It is the central Lights Out, Texas! recommendation. The campaign’s statewide impact was difficult to quantify because historical data were insufficient. |
| Make glass more visible to birds | A persistent building change; property owners or managers can alter glazing or add treatments. | The 2024 report described 60% fewer collisions after windows were darkened at a large Chicago urban building over a 20-year period, and 94% fewer at a Portland government building over one year after a retrofit with bird-safe film. These are results at specific buildings, not a guarantee for other buildings or household products. |
For a household window, the cited reporting supports the general concern about reflective or hard-to-see glass, but it does not establish that a particular decal or film will deliver the Portland result. Do not assume a product-specific reduction from a study of a different building retrofit.
How to follow migration and report collisions
BirdCast offers a live migration tracker, which can help people follow migration activity. Collision observations can be contributed through iNaturalist. These tools help people monitor movement and document observations; they do not establish the effect of a particular household lighting change.

In its account of fall 2020 and spring 2021 surveys, the Texas Conservation Alliance reported 100 mornings of collision surveys, 345 volunteers, 912 cumulative miles surveyed, 669 collision mortalities across 67 species, more than 900 volunteer hours, and participation by 23 downtown Dallas buildings. Those are the organization’s reported totals for that project, not statewide annual counts.

The figures make the scale of migration and collisions clear, while leaving uncertainty about the exact mechanisms and statewide outcomes. The 2024 report said it was hard to gauge the Texas campaign’s impact because historical data were insufficient. Chicago and Portland building results show that changes at particular sites were associated with fewer collisions there; they do not prove the same effect for every property or demonstrate a statewide Texas outcome.
