A 2018 study identified a DNA duplication near the ALX4 gene on chromosome 18 that helps explain blue eyes in many Siberian Huskies, but it does not account for every dog.
How do blue eyes appear blue?
The iris is the colored part of the eye. When it has less pigment, light scatters through it in a way that makes the eye appear blue. The American Kennel Club (AKC) compares this effect to the way the sky appears blue: the color is an effect of light, not blue pigment in the iris. AKC’s explanation of blue eyes in dogs describes the distinction.
What does genetics have to do with Husky eye color?
A 2018 canine genetics study found an association between blue eyes and a duplicated stretch of DNA near ALX4 on chromosome 18. The region is thought to affect pigment deposition as the eye develops. AKC says the study analyzed owner-reported eye color alongside genome data from more than 6,000 dogs.
In that study sample, the variant explained 82 of 108 blue-eyed Siberian Huskies—75%, as reported by AKC. That is the share of blue-eyed Siberian Huskies in the study whose eye color was explained by the finding. It is not an estimate of how many Huskies worldwide have blue eyes, nor a measure of a consumer DNA test’s accuracy. AKC’s study summary reports the figures.

The association is not a complete explanation. AKC reports that some brown-eyed dogs in the study carried one copy of the variant, while the finding did not explain every blue-eyed dog. The reason for these exceptions is not fully understood; other genes may affect or mask how the trait appears. It is therefore inaccurate to say that one gene determines every Husky’s eye color.
Can Huskies have different eye colors?
Yes. The AKC Siberian Husky breed standard permits brown eyes, blue eyes, one of each, or parti-colored eyes. Heterochromia—the term for eyes of different colors—can therefore be a normal Husky appearance, as can an eye with more than one color. The AKC Siberian Husky standard states: “Eyes may be brown or blue in color; one of each or parti-colored are acceptable.”

Does blue eye color mean a Husky has a health problem?
Blue eyes alone do not establish that a dog has an eye disease. AKC says there is no evidence that dogs with blue eyes have greater eye damage from ultraviolet light because of their eye color. That statement concerns a proposed color-related risk; it does not rule out other causes of eye problems. If a dog develops symptoms or a change in its eyes or vision, seek advice from a veterinarian rather than judging its health by eye color.

Not necessarily. AKC distinguishes the ALX4-region finding associated with Huskies from mechanisms linked to merle, extreme white spotting, roan, and albinism in other breeds. A Husky’s blue eyes should not, by themselves, be treated as evidence that the dog has a merle coat pattern.
