Dogs do not literally see with their noses, and smell does not replace vision. But a 2022 study found direct white-matter connections between dogs’ olfactory bulbs and the occipital lobe, a brain region associated with vision. That anatomy supports the idea that smell is woven into how dogs gather information about their surroundings—though it cannot tell us exactly what a dog experiences.
Are dogs’ noses connected to their visual brain?
In a 2022 study, researchers used brain imaging and anatomical dissection to map pathways from the olfactory bulb in dogs. They identified connections to several regions, including the occipital lobe, which is associated with visual processing. Cornell’s summary reports that the MRI scans covered 23 healthy dogs. The study’s authors described the olfactory-bulb-to-occipital pathway as the first documentation of this connection in any species. The study, published in The Journal of Neuroscience, establishes anatomical connectivity—not that dogs see odors, that smell causes a particular visual experience, or that olfaction replaces sight.
Pip Johnson, the study’s senior author and an assistant professor in Cornell’s Department of Clinical Sciences, said: “We’ve never seen this connection between the nose and the occipital lobe, functionally the visual cortex in dogs, in any species.” Johnson also interpreted the finding this way: “Whereas in dogs, this study shows that olfaction is really integrated with vision in terms of how they learn about their environment and orient themselves in it.” That is an interpretation of the mapped anatomy, not a direct test of how dogs perceive or navigate a room. Cornell Chronicle reported the findings on July 18, 2022.
How do dogs experience the world through smell?
For a dog, exploring a place can mean collecting chemical information as well as looking around. Odors can carry clues about other animals, people, food, and the immediate environment. Canine olfaction also connects with brain systems discussed in relation to memory and emotion, according to the 2022 pathway study. This helps explain why a scent may be meaningful beyond simply identifying what produced it, without establishing precisely what a dog remembers or feels.

- ★ Guarantee: If you are not satisfied with our dog feeding snuffle mat, please feel free to contact us.
The broader role of smell is reflected in dogs’ social behavior and practical detection work. A review of canine olfaction discusses its physiology, behavior, and applications in training and detection. Working dogs demonstrate what trained dogs can do in particular tasks; they are not proof that every pet dog has the same ability or motivation. The 2021 review in Animals covers these applications.
Why do dogs sniff everything?
A sniff is a way to sample the air, not just an idle habit. A peer-reviewed review reports that about 12–13% of inhaled airflow is directed toward the olfactory region during inspiration, while most follows the respiratory route. The review also describes how separate nostrils can sample odor independently; comparing those samples may help a dog locate where an odor is coming from. These airflow and sampling findings draw on canine olfaction literature.

Research using experimental sniffing data and a computational model reconstructed from MRI describes distinct respiratory and olfactory airflow paths. The model offers an explanation for how odor-bearing air reaches sensory tissue; it should not be treated as direct observation of every dog or every odor. The researchers also describe separate odor samples collected by each nostril as a possible aid to source localization. The fluid-dynamics study appeared in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface.
For a pet, sniffing during a walk or supervised exploration is a natural opportunity to gather information. Owners can let dogs investigate safe areas at their own pace, while keeping them away from hazards and respecting leash and local safety rules. A scent-search game at home can be a simple activity, but a consumer kit is not necessary, and a home game is not the same as professional detection-dog training.

How much better can dogs smell than people?
There is no single multiplier that applies to every dog, odor, or situation. A 2018 review reports estimates that canine odor-detection sensitivity can be 10,000–100,000 times that of an average human, and cites a lower detectability estimate of one part per trillion for volatile organic compounds. These are review-reported estimates, not universal thresholds for all smells or a guarantee about an individual dog’s performance. The review in Frontiers in Veterinary Science also notes that health and environmental conditions can affect olfactory function.
Inflammation, changes in blood flow or hydration, systemic illness, exercise and conditioning, high ambient temperature, and other environmental conditions may influence performance, particularly in working dogs. A dog’s ability to detect a scent is therefore not a fixed figure that can be inferred from a general comparison with humans.

Does breed determine a dog’s sense of smell?
Breed labels alone do not establish which dog will be best at scent work. A 2025 comparative study examined olfactory anatomy and genetics across 56 domestic dog breeds, along with gray wolves and coyotes. It found no shared genetic or morphological profile among functional or genealogical breed groupings such as scent hounds that indicated human-directed selection for superior olfaction. The authors suggest that advantageous behavior and training may matter more to detection success than a breed-group olfactory edge. The study was published in Molecular Biology and Evolution.
The same comparison reports possible loss of functional olfactory receptor genes alongside reduced nasal morphology in domestic dogs relative to wild canids. That finding concerns broad comparisons with wild relatives; it does not mean individual dogs cannot be highly capable scent workers.
