Yes—but the evidence applies to a rare group of dogs already known for learning object names, not to dogs generally. In a 2026 experiment, seven of 10 Gifted Word Learner dogs learned new toy labels after overhearing their owners talk about the toys to another person. The finding points to a limited language-related skill: linking spoken labels to objects. It does not show that dogs have human language.
What did the dogs learn by overhearing?
Shany Dror and colleagues tested 10 Gifted Word Learner (GWL) dogs—dogs with a demonstrated ability to learn object labels—with two unfamiliar toy names. In the overheard-speech condition, an owner discussed each toy with another person without addressing the dog. In a comparison condition, the owner spoke to the dog directly while naming the toys.
Each label received eight minutes of exposure, spread across four nonconsecutive days. Researchers then asked the dogs to retrieve the named toy from a set containing both new and familiar toys. Seven of the 10 dogs performed above chance in each condition, and performance did not differ significantly between direct address and overheard speech. The study was published in Science on January 8, 2026.
The first retrieval attempt for each new toy is especially informative: group accuracy was 16 of 20 trials (80%) after direct address and 20 of 20 trials (100%) after overheard speech. Because these were first attempts, the dogs could not have learned the labels through repeated retrieval testing.

Does this mean dogs understand words like people do?
The experiment supports a narrower claim: some selected dogs can associate a spoken label with an object and use that association to retrieve the matching toy. It does not establish that dogs interpret words with the breadth, grammar, or abstract meaning characteristic of human language.
The authors describe the skill as functionally similar to aspects of how young children learn, while emphasizing that language is uniquely human. Lead author Shany Dror, quoted in a University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna release, said the results show that some socio-cognitive processes involved in learning from overheard speech are not exclusive to humans. That comparison concerns the specific learning behavior, not equivalence between dogs and children. The university summary also notes that the study’s findings should not be generalized to all dogs.

Do ordinary family dogs learn toy names this way?
The researchers also tested 10 typical family dogs using the overheard-label procedure. Six initially chose the new toys more often than chance, but a more careful analysis accounted for a common kind of mistake: choosing one new toy instead of the other. Under that analysis, none performed above chance.
This distinction matters because a dog might select a novel toy without identifying the spoken label. The primary result is therefore specific to the rare GWL group; it does not show that dogs generally learn object names by eavesdropping.

Can dogs connect a name to a toy they cannot see?
In a separate experiment, researchers showed a new toy to eight GWL dogs, hid it, and then said its label. Five of the eight later retrieved the matching toy above chance. On a follow-up test two weeks later, the group performed similarly, suggesting that the label-object mappings persisted over that interval.
This was a small test with selected dogs and a particular retrieval task, not a general measure of canine memory. It does show that, for some GWL dogs, seeing an object at the moment its name is spoken is not always necessary for learning the association.

What might distinguish label-learning dogs?
A separate 2025 study compared 11 label-learning dogs with 11 control dogs matched for age, sex, and breed across eight cognitive tests. The researchers reported differences associated with interest in novel objects, attention directed toward objects, and inhibitory skills. These are candidate correlates, not proven causes or a reliable way to predict whether an individual dog will learn labels. The researchers cautioned that the sample was small and called for replication with more dogs. The study appeared in Scientific Reports in November 2025.
It also remains unclear how GWL dogs first develop their unusual ability. The studies do not establish that a particular toy, training product, or naming routine can make a typical dog acquire it.

What the findings establish—and what they do not
- Established: In a specific experiment, seven of 10 preselected GWL dogs learned new toy labels after overhearing people discuss them.
- Not established: That dogs as a population learn words by overhearing, or that dogs possess human language.
- Suggestive, but limited: Some GWL dogs learned labels when the toy was hidden during naming, and the group retained the mappings at a two-week follow-up.
- Still uncertain: Why a small number of dogs develop label-learning ability, and whether the cognitive traits associated with it are causes, consequences, or simply correlated features.
