The Maldives offers dolphin-watching trips from many resorts, but the available evidence does not establish a ranked top ten of dolphin and whale hotspots. The ten atolls below are practical bases to investigate—not a promise of sightings or a claim that one is better than another. Spinner dolphins are the most common cetacean in Maldivian waters and the usual target of short resort trips, according to the International Whaling Commission (IWC) Maldives profile.

Ten candidate bases for dolphin and whale watching

These locations are starting points for checking local trip options, not an evidence-based ranking. Ask a resort or local operator whether it currently runs cetacean trips, where the boat goes, and what the outing includes. The IWC describes resort dolphin excursions as common across the Maldives, but the sources available do not establish comparative sighting rates for these atolls.

  1. North Malé Atoll

A practical place to ask resorts about short dolphin trips. The IWC notes that resort excursions commonly target spinner dolphins, but does not identify North Malé as better than other atolls.

  2. South Malé Atoll

Ask whether local trips visit reef channels used by spinner dolphins. No comparative cetacean sighting data for this atoll is established in the cited sources.

How to choose an operator and view wildlife responsibly

The IWC says the Maldives has no national marine-mammal-watching regulations or guidelines, although some operators follow guidance from other organizations. Before booking, ask how the boat approaches animals and whether it pursues or encircles pods. Prefer an operator that explains its own viewing rules and lets animals move away rather than pressing close for a view.

Rules for whale sharks are separate from dolphin-watching guidance. Visit Maldives Corporation’s 13 October 2024 release summarizes Regulation No. 2024/R-96: keep at least 3 m from the whale shark’s body and 4 m from its tail; do not touch, hold, feed, chase or obstruct it; avoid flash photography, selfie sticks and bright lights; and follow vessel limits and speed restrictions in the contact zone. These requirements apply to whale sharks, not as a general dolphin-watching code. Visit Maldives Corporation’s regulation announcement.

Visit Maldives’ published whale-shark encounter guidance also advises keeping distance, not touching or swimming over the animal, not obstructing its path, avoiding flash and reducing noise. Read the encounter guidance.
