No. Repellent-impregnated wristbands do not provide reliable protection against outdoor insects. The CDC calls them ineffective, and a controlled laboratory study found that the three wristbands it tested offered no protection. For bite prevention, choose an EPA-registered skin-applied repellent suited to the pests and exposure time, and follow its label.
What the evidence says about repellent wristbands
The CDC Yellow Book lists repellent-impregnated wristbands among ineffective approaches to preventing insect bites. A controlled laboratory comparison involving 15 volunteers likewise found no protection from the three wristbands tested. That study, published in 2002, applies to those products and test conditions; it does not establish that every possible wristband formulation has been independently tested.
The evidence does not support relying on a wristband as your main protection outdoors. It also does not support treating a wristband as a substitute for a labeled repellent.
What to use instead
Choose an EPA-registered skin-applied repellent
The CDC recommends EPA-registered repellents containing active ingredients such as DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), para-menthane-diol (PMD), or 2-undecanone when used as directed. EPA says that registration of most skin-applied repellents means it evaluated and approved their safety and effectiveness when used according to label instructions. Some exempt, unregistered products have not been evaluated for effectiveness.

Compare products by the insects or other pests they target, active ingredient, stated protection time, and how long you expect to be outside. EPA’s repellent selection tool lets you compare active ingredients, protection times, and other product information. Its database was last updated in June 2019, so check the current product label and details for any specific repellent.
Protection time is not a guarantee. EPA notes that stated times reflect testing conditions, and the CDC says duration and effectiveness can vary with the pest species, temperature, activity, perspiration, water exposure, and rubbing. Follow the product label for application and reapplication rather than assuming one ingredient or concentration lasts a fixed amount of time in every situation.

Add treated clothing and gear where appropriate
The CDC also recommends permethrin-treated clothing and gear as an additional prevention measure. Permethrin products for clothing or gear should not be applied directly to skin. This measure complements, rather than replaces, an appropriate skin-applied repellent when one is needed.
Use repellents safely, especially around children
- Use a registered repellent according to its product label.
- Do not use OLE or PMD products on children younger than three, as advised by the CDC.
- Do not apply repellent to a child’s hands, eyes, mouth, cuts, or irritated skin. For a child’s face, an adult should put repellent on their own hands first, then apply it to the child’s face.
- Do not apply permethrin products directly to skin.
For animal owners, the article’s recommendations concern human repellents and clothing or gear. Do not apply a human repellent or a clothing-treatment product to a pet unless its label specifically permits that use and your veterinarian advises it.

Why sound-emitting devices are not a proven replacement
Sound-emitting devices are not a supported alternative to wristbands or registered repellents. The EPA says it has no safety or effectiveness data for these unregistered products and does not know whether they work against mosquitoes. Choose a repellent with an appropriate label instead of relying on sound alone.
