Raising Soay sheep means providing secure fencing, suitable grazing, fresh water, regular observation and prompt veterinary care—not simply turning a hardy breed out on land. Soay are small and generally shed their fleece naturally, but land capacity, parasite control and breeding dates depend on your site and flock. Start with a conservative number of sheep, make handling practical, and get local advice for grazing, feed and health decisions.

What do Soay sheep need?

Soay are inquisitive sheep, and their small size does not remove the need for sound daily husbandry. Before bringing any home, make sure you can provide:

  • Well-maintained fencing and a way to gather sheep safely for inspection or treatment.
  • Suitable forage and fresh, clean water every day; water should ideally be available at all times, especially for lactating ewes.
  • Regular checks for changes in appetite, movement, condition or behaviour, with prompt care for illness or injury.
  • Time, facilities and experience appropriate to the number of animals you keep.

The UK government’s sheep welfare code provides a general framework for care and legal context in England; it is not a substitute for local rules elsewhere or advice tailored to Soay. It emphasizes that “Good stockmanship is of paramount importance in all systems of sheep production.”

How many sheep can I keep on my land?

There is no dependable universal acreage-per-Soay figure. Carrying capacity depends on land quality, forage, terrain, climate, and how the grazing is managed. The Soay and Boreray Sheep Society FAQ notes that productive lowland pasture may support more sheep than less-favourable upland ground. Its practical advice is to begin with fewer animals: adding to a flock is easier than finding homes for surplus sheep.

For conservation grazing, do not choose numbers by breed reputation or acreage alone. Follow the grazing agreement’s objectives and seek advice from a specialist familiar with the site. Stocking decisions should also reflect your facilities, competence and available time, as the UK code advises.

What fencing do Soay sheep need?

The breed society recommends sheep stock fencing kept taut at the bottom, with a strand over the top. It describes Soay as inquisitive and prone to finding small gaps; frightened sheep may jump high fences, so calm handling is part of keeping them contained. Check fences and hedges regularly for damage or openings.

The government code says fences should be maintained to prevent injury and entanglement. Mesh needs particular attention around horned sheep and lambing fields. A small enclosure where sheep are fed regularly can make routine inspection and treatment easier; plan this handling area before you need it in an urgent situation.

What should Soay sheep eat and drink?

Use the welfare code as a baseline, not as a breed-specific ration: sheep need suitable feed in sufficient quantity to maintain health, gradual changes when feed is altered, and fresh, clean water each day. Water should ideally be accessible at all times and is especially important during lactation.

Do not use feed or mineral preparations intended for another species unless their composition is confirmed suitable for sheep. Copper can harm sheep. Forage quality, ration formulation and mineral provision should be discussed with a veterinarian or qualified local agricultural adviser who understands your land and flock.

Do Soay sheep need shearing?

Usually, Soay shed their fleece naturally rather than needing routine shearing. The society says shedding starts from about April, with rams often shedding before ewes. A fleece should only be rooed—gently removed by hand—once it has loosened naturally.

Some animals, more often sheep that have not bred that year, may fail to shed. Monitor individuals rather than assuming every fleece will come away; fleece retained when it should have shed may need clipping to reduce fly-strike risk. The UK welfare code says mature sheep should have fleece removed at least once a year, while the breed society describes natural shedding as normal for Soay. If an animal has not shed, or you are unsure how the general code applies to your flock, ask a veterinarian or experienced breed adviser and check the rules in your jurisdiction.

How should I manage parasites and watch for illness?

There is no universal Soay worming calendar or dose. The society says parasite treatment depends on stocking density, whether sheep have grazed the land before, and the animals’ origins. It describes some keepers treating around tupping (mating) and after lambing in low-density settings on land not previously grazed by sheep, while noting lambs may need closer attention. Those examples are not a prescription for another flock. Choose tests and treatment with current veterinary and local parasite-control advice; dosing should not be guessed.

Dirty hindquarters or coughing can be warning signs, but they do not diagnose a parasite problem. General sheep-health indicators in the government code include:

  • Signs associated with good health: alertness, free movement, active feeding and rumination, and no visible injury or lameness.
  • Possible signs of ill health: listlessness, abnormal posture, lameness, scouring, failure to chew cud, persistent coughing or panting, scratching, loss of body condition, or isolation from the flock.

These signs warrant attention, not remote diagnosis. Arrange prompt care for an ill or injured sheep and seek veterinary advice if it does not respond.

When do Soay sheep lamb?

Soay lambing usually takes place in April or May. The society estimates ewe gestation at about 147 days, so a ram date roughly 147 days before the earliest intended lambing is a planning guide, not a universal ideal. Local climate and how much time lambs will have to grow before winter should shape the breeding decision.

How do I choose Soay sheep?

The breed society recommends visiting more than one breeder, asking questions and considering recognized rare-breed sales as another sourcing route. Check the animals’ health and condition, teeth, and—if buying breeding females—the udders and teats. Ask about registration documentation, the flock’s origins and health history, breeder support, and transport and movement requirements that apply where you live.

Soay can suit a range of grazing settings, but the society’s statement that the breed is “not hard to keep” is conditional on good fencing. Assess the site, facilities and time you can commit rather than choosing animals on that description alone.

What does Soay research tell keepers?

The University of Edinburgh’s 2023 Soay Sheep Project annual report, published in 2024, describes observations of the St Kilda population—not a farm trial or a set of husbandry prescriptions. In that population, low birth weight, twin status, losing the mother in the first year, high population density, higher average parasite loads, and wet and windy winter conditions were associated with lower first-year survival. Among sheep that survived beyond their first year, greater birth weight was associated with more lifetime offspring, linked in the report to longer lifespan, a higher chance of breeding each year and more offspring per breeding attempt. These population-level associations do not predict the outcome for an individual farm animal.

The report’s Figure 11 models lifetime breeding success among sheep that survived beyond their first year using 1,721 observations. It also reports an average 1.6°C increase in late-summer temperatures on St Kilda between 1987 and 2003, citing weather data from Stornoway Airport. Both figures describe the study context, not a farm-level forecast.

Further reading

The breed society says books specifically about managing Soay or Boreray sheep are not yet available. For general flock management it recommends Starting with Sheep by Mary Castell; for an illustrated general health reference, Sheep Ailments by Eddie Straiton. It also recommends Island Survivors: The Ecology of the Soay Sheep of St Kilda by Peter Jewell for ecological background, but describes it as out of print and hard to find, so check current availability.
