The Perks of Having Bats in Your Garden—and How to Attract Them

UK bats eat insects and use gardens as part of a wider landscape. Learn how planting, water, darkness and suitable shelter can make a garden more bat-friendly.

Bats can make use of gardens as places to feed, drink and move between roosts and other feeding grounds. In the UK, they eat insects, so a garden with varied planting, water, fewer pesticides and dark, connected routes can offer useful habitat. These changes may make a garden more suitable for bats, but they cannot guarantee a visit or a roost.

What bats contribute to a garden

All UK bat species eat insects. A garden that supports moths and other insects can therefore provide foraging opportunities, while bats form part of the wider food web. Their presence is one sign of wildlife using the wider landscape—not a promise that they will control mosquitoes or other garden pests.

The benefits can extend beyond one plot. Bat Conservation Trust (BCT) estimates that UK gardens cover around 5,000 km², making them a substantial part of the landscape. Gardens can also support other wildlife and give people opportunities to experience nature. BCT puts the idea simply: “When we garden for bats, we create spaces where wildlife and people can thrive together.”

How to make your garden more useful to bats

Grow plants that support night-flying insects

Choose a range of locally appropriate plants, including flowers likely to attract moths and other insects active at night. Varied vegetation can provide food and shelter for insects across the seasons. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) also recommends non-chemical approaches to pest problems; avoiding routine pesticide use helps preserve insect prey.

Add water and wildlife-friendly corners

A small wildlife pond or other water feature can add habitat, while a compost heap, mixed vegetation and less-tidy corners can help support a greater variety of insects. Choose features that suit your space and maintain them safely. Water alone does not guarantee bats will come.

Keep routes dark

Bats use connected landscapes, including hedgerows, rivers and tree-lined routes, to travel between feeding places and roosts. Gardens and green spaces can act as stepping stones within those routes. Avoid unnecessary outdoor lighting: BCT notes that light can delay bats leaving roosts, reduce feeding time and disrupt movement.

Where lighting is necessary, use low-level, directional lights and keep their beams off trees, ponds, bat boxes and roof spaces. A dark route through or beside a garden may matter more than adding a feature in isolation.

Consider a suitable bat box

A bat box can provide a possible shelter feature, but it is not a substitute for insect-rich habitat, water and dark connections. Whether a box suits a garden depends on local bat species and site conditions, and occupancy is never guaranteed. BCT and RHS offer guidance on bat-box suitability and placement; get advice before installing one if you are unsure what is appropriate locally.

Which changes should you choose?

There is no universal best improvement: the right choice depends on the garden, local species and nearby habitat. Use this comparison to match an action to what your space lacks.

Action What it can add Space and upkeep Best fit
Varied, locally appropriate planting Food and shelter for insects that bats eat Can be adapted to beds, borders or containers; upkeep depends on planting choices Most gardens, especially where flowers for night-flying insects are limited
Compost heap or less-tidy corner Potentially more insect abundance and diversity Needs some space and suitable maintenance Gardens where a small area can be left less intensively managed
Small wildlife pond or water feature Water and additional habitat Requires room and ongoing care Gardens that can accommodate a safely maintained water feature
Reduced or redirected lighting A darker route for movement and feeding Usually involves changing existing lights or how they are used Gardens where lighting reaches trees, water or likely travel routes
Suitable bat box A possible shelter or roosting feature Needs an appropriate site and correct installation Gardens where local advice indicates a box could suit the species and setting

These actions work best as parts of a habitat rather than as isolated promises: planting and water can help support prey and habitat, while a box addresses shelter more directly. Connections to existing hedges, trees, ponds and green spaces also matter. A BCT page summarizing a study reports that gardens made up 36% of Paris’s total green areas and up to 47.9% of bat habitat availability; those figures describe Paris, not a universal result for other cities or gardens.

Bat safety and legal protection

Rules vary by country. In England, government guidance says it is unlawful to deliberately capture, injure or kill bats; damage or destroy a breeding or resting place; obstruct access to a resting or sheltering place; or intentionally or recklessly disturb a bat in a protected place. Do not handle bats or alter a place that may be an occupied roost. If you have concerns about bats or a building, contact the National Bat Helpline, run by BCT. Outside England, check the rules with your local authority or conservation organization.
