Turkens are Naked Neck chickens, not chicken–turkey hybrids. Also called Transylvanian Naked Necks, they are a dual-purpose breed kept for eggs and meat. Their bare neck is a natural breed feature, but reduced feathering means their housing and care should protect them from extreme cold.

What is a Turken?

“Turken” is a common name for the Naked Neck chicken, also known as the Transylvanian Naked Neck. The nickname can suggest a turkey cross, but the bird is a chicken breed. Oklahoma State University describes an unfeathered band between the shoulders and the base of the skull as part of its appearance.

The breed is described as dual-purpose for eggs and meat. That is a general breed use, not a promise of a particular egg count, growth rate, or output from an individual flock. The Oklahoma State profile lists tinted-brown eggs and notes that hens have been known to go broody; it does not establish that every hen will brood reliably. See the Oklahoma State University Naked Neck profile for the breed description.

What size do Turkens reach?

Oklahoma State University lists the following standard weights. These are breed-standard figures, not a forecast of how quickly a backyard bird will grow or what a particular bird will weigh.

How should you house and care for Turkens?

Provide suitable shelter, especially in cold weather

Naked Necks have less insulation than fully feathered chickens, so plan housing and management to protect them from extreme cold. The breed profile does not give a safe temperature cutoff; avoid treating any single temperature as a breed-specific threshold. Keep the coop suitable for chickens and make sure birds can shelter from weather. For practical housing and equipment guidance for small chicken flocks, consult Poultry Extension’s guide to raising meat chickens in small or backyard flocks. Its space figures concern meat chickens and should not be treated as a universal stocking rule for Naked Necks.

Care for chicks with chicken-appropriate guidance

Young chickens need appropriate warmth, clean water and feed, dry housing, and daily attention. Set up suitable brooding equipment, such as a heat source, feeder, waterer, and bedding, and follow chicken-specific recommendations for the chicks’ age and conditions from a poultry extension service or veterinarian.

Do not use turkey-poult feeding formulas or brooding temperatures as Naked Neck chicken requirements. The University of Kentucky-authored guide to raising meat turkeys in small or backyard flocks discusses turkey-specific diets and brooding. Those recommendations apply to turkeys, not chicken chicks.

Build daily checks into your routine

Check that birds have feed and clean water, and inspect their housing and condition every day. Keep the living area dry and appropriate for the flock’s needs. The small-flock chicken guidance above covers practical equipment and housing considerations; use advice that fits your birds’ age and purpose rather than applying meat-chicken figures as a breed rule.

What should you check before keeping a flock?

Local zoning and processing rules can limit poultry keeping or what you may do with birds. Check the requirements where you live before bringing home chicks or planning to process birds. Rules and suitable chicken-care recommendations vary by location, so consult local authorities and chicken-specific extension or veterinary guidance.

What is not established about the breed?

The cited breed profile does not establish an annual egg count, lifespan, guaranteed temperament, or a precise cold-temperature limit. It also does not provide a head-to-head ranking against other breeds for egg production, growth, feed efficiency, or cold hardiness. Treat claims about those qualities cautiously unless they are supported by comparable evidence.
