Chiggers are tiny mite larvae that attach to skin and trigger intensely itchy welts. They do not burrow under your skin or suck blood. After a possible exposure, take a warm, soapy shower and launder the clothes you wore; if welts have already appeared, focus on soothing the itch rather than trying to dig out a mite. To prevent future bites, avoid brushy areas, cover skin, and use a repellent labeled for chiggers.

What are chiggers?

Chiggers, also called red bugs or harvest mites, are the six-legged larval stage of mites. Only the larval stage bites people. The larvae are very small—about 1/120 to 1/150 inch long, according to University of Maryland Extension—and may be difficult to see without magnification. Later nymph and adult stages feed on small arthropods.

Larvae wait on vegetation or soil and transfer to a person or animal that brushes past. They are commonly found in tall grass, weeds, brush, and the overgrown margins where lawns meet wooded or shrubby areas. Their distribution can be patchy, even where habitat seems suitable.

Do chiggers burrow under your skin?

No. Chiggers do not burrow under the skin and do not feed on blood. They attach to the surface and inject digestive saliva that liquefies skin cells; the resulting immune reaction causes an itchy welt. As Loganathan Ponnusamy, a principal research scholar at North Carolina State University, said in a CDC podcast interview in August 2023, “Chiggers do not burrow into skin and feed on blood as many think.”

Because the itch is a reaction to saliva, it can continue after the mite has detached. By the time bumps appear, a chigger may no longer be present. Scraping, digging, or trying to suffocate a supposed embedded mite will not treat the cause of the itch and can damage skin.

What do chigger bites look and feel like?

Bites commonly appear as small red welts or bumps. They often occur around ankles and sock lines, waistbands, armpits, the groin, and behind the knees—places where clothing fits tightly or a mite can settle near a hair follicle.

Itching is often delayed, starting about three to six hours after exposure, and may last for days. Maryland Extension notes that it can persist for up to two weeks. Scratching can break the skin and raise the risk of a secondary infection.

What should you do after possible chigger exposure?

  1. Shower as soon as practical. Use warm, soapy water and gently wash or scrub the skin with a washcloth. This can remove mites that have not attached or fed.
  2. Change and wash exposed clothes. Launder the garments before wearing them again; mites may remain on clothing after an outdoor outing.
  3. If welts are already present, leave them alone. Do not scrape, cut, or dig into the skin to find a chigger. The mite may already be gone, while the skin reaction continues.
  4. Use an appropriate itch reliever if needed. Antihistamines and corticosteroid creams or lotions may help. Calamine, pramoxine, camphor or menthol products, and hydrocortisone are also discussed by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. Follow the product label and ask a pharmacist or clinician if you are unsure what is suitable.

Fingernail polish is not a proven way to kill a chigger under the skin; the idea comes from a misunderstanding of how chiggers feed. Iowa State University Extension notes that home remedies have not been tested to establish effectiveness.

How can you prevent chigger bites?

  • Avoid tall grass, brush, and overgrown margins when possible; stay on mown paths and avoid sitting or lying directly on the ground.
  • Wear long sleeves, long pants, and closed shoes or boots. Loose-fitting, tightly woven clothing can help limit contact. Secure trouser cuffs inside socks or boots.
  • Use an EPA-registered repellent whose label covers chiggers and the intended use. Apply it as directed and reapply only as the label instructs. The CDC prevention guidance recommends an EPA-registered repellent containing DEET or another active ingredient registered for chiggers; apply sunscreen before repellent.
  • Permethrin is for clothing and gear, not skin. CDC describes treating clothing and gear with 0.5% permethrin or buying treated items. Texas A&M says treated clothing can remain effective through several washings, but the exact duration depends on the product label.

For children, CDC advises covering arms and legs and not applying repellent to hands, eyes, mouth, cuts, or irritated skin. To apply repellent to a child’s face, put it on an adult’s hands first, then apply it carefully. Follow the product label.

How do you get rid of chiggers in your yard?

Start by making frequently used areas less favorable to chiggers: mow grass and trim shrubbery to improve airflow and help the ground dry. Pay particular attention to overgrown vegetation and the transitions between lawn, woods, and brush instead of assuming the entire yard is infested.

Extension advice on pesticides differs. Maryland Extension says, “The use of pesticides to control chiggers is not recommended or effective.” Texas A&M says some residual insecticide sprays labeled for the site and pest may suppress numbers, while noting that granular products are generally less effective than sprays. Iowa State Extension cautions that direct chemical control is often impractical because large areas may need repeated treatment.

These differences mean routine spraying should not be treated as a reliable way to eliminate chiggers. If you are considering a pesticide, consult local extension guidance and use only a product labeled for the site and pest. Follow all label precautions for people, pets, plants, and re-entry.

Can chiggers spread disease?

Risk depends on where exposure occurred. In parts of Asia-Pacific, infected chiggers transmit scrub typhus, an illness caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi. The CDC reports cases mainly in rural areas of Southeast Asia, Indonesia, China, Japan, the Indian subcontinent, and northern Australia. Symptoms can include fever, chills, headache, body aches, rash, enlarged lymph nodes, and an eschar—a dark, scab-like area at the bite site. CDC says early doxycycline treatment is recommended.

A CDC podcast interview in August 2023 reported that chiggers had been found in all 50 U.S. states and discussed Orientia detected in field-collected U.S. chiggers. The interviewee said the epidemiology of potential chigger-borne diseases in the United States was not understood. Detection of bacteria in collected mites does not establish that U.S. chigger bites are causing human scrub typhus.

If you develop fever, headache, body aches, rash, or a dark scab-like lesion after travel to a scrub-typhus area, contact a healthcare provider promptly and share where and when you traveled. Seek medical advice as well if itching is severe, symptoms worsen or fail to improve, or the skin appears infected.
