For home use, LEM says its #12, #22, and #32 Big Bite grinders can handle raw chicken bones only; it warns against other bones. STX’s Turboforce II 4000 manual describes a different, model-specific use for soft bones with meat. Commercial bone grinders are a separate class of machinery, not household alternatives. None of these grinder claims establishes that a raw diet is safe or nutritionally complete.
How to choose a meat-and-bone grinder
Start with the material, not the motor size or product name. Bone-grinding capability is specific to the model and its maker’s instructions; a grinder described as powerful or suitable for meat is not automatically suitable for bones.
- Name the animal and bone. Chicken leg bones, rabbit bones, and whole beef bones are not interchangeable use cases. Match the exact material to a model’s stated limits.
- Estimate your batch size and frequency. A household appliance and a production machine serve different settings. The available specifications do not establish comparative household throughput or independent performance rankings.
- Follow the model’s preparation and feeding directions. Portion size, temperature, grinding plates, and sequence can differ. Do not transfer one manufacturer’s instructions to another grinder.
- Account for wear and food-safety responsibilities. Bone grinding can increase wear on consumable parts, and grinding does not address pathogen risk or whether a diet meets a dog’s nutritional needs.
Household grinders with model-specific bone guidance
LEM Big Bite #12, #22, and #32
LEM says its #12, #22, and #32 Big Bite grinders can grind raw chicken bones. The company limits that guidance to raw chicken: it warns that thicker bones, such as cow bones, may damage its grinders. This is not a claim that these models can process beef, pork, or every bone-in ingredient. LEM says its #5 and #8 Big Bite models, countertop grinders, and hand grinders do not grind bone. See LEM’s bone-grinding guidance before choosing a model or preparing a batch.
For the eligible models, LEM advises feeding one raw chicken leg or thigh at a time, keeping the meat cold but not frozen, and using the stuffing plate for the first grind. It describes an optional second grind with the 10 mm plate. These are LEM’s instructions for its products, not general directions for other grinders.

LEM also cautions that grinding bone may shorten the life of consumable parts, including the bushing, knives, and plates. Factor replacement-part wear into ownership rather than assuming bone use has no maintenance cost. The available information does not establish a service-life estimate.
STX Turboforce II 4000
The STX Turboforce II 4000 series manual describes the model as designed to grind meat and soft bones with meat for homemade pet food. Its directions cover double-grinding preparations involving chicken, squirrel, quail, and rabbit bones, and instruct users to cut meat and bone into smaller portions. Those directions apply to the named model and materials in the manual; they do not establish capability for all STX grinders or all bone types. Consult the STX Turboforce II 4000 manual for the complete preparation instructions.

A machine’s ability to grind an ingredient does not make that ingredient safe to feed, prevent contamination, or make a recipe nutritionally complete. The FDA’s 2004 guidance on raw pet food says: “The scientific literature indicates that feeding raw meat products carries a risk to human and animal health that is significant given the microbiological results from studies of ingredients that could compose such products and the limited sampling of commercial raw pet foods themselves.” The guidance addresses manufacturing and labeling to protect animals and people exposed to the food, as well as risks such as nutritional deficiency. It remains available as FDA guidance, but its publication date is 2004. Read the FDA raw pet-food guidance.

In a separate, specific example, an FDA warning letter dated April 30, 2026, to Best Buy Bones, Inc. said the agency’s review found that the company’s validation study did not provide sufficient evidence that its beef-bone thermal treatment could significantly reduce or prevent pathogens. This finding concerns that company’s study; it is not a finding about all bone products or meat grinders. See the FDA warning letter.

Practical decision
- For raw chicken bones at home: LEM’s stated use case supports considering its #12, #22, or #32 Big Bite models, subject to the company’s raw-chicken-only limit and feeding instructions.
- For soft bones with meat: Check the STX Turboforce II 4000 manual if that exact model and its listed bone preparations match your intended use.
- For other bone types or production volumes: Do not infer suitability from a household model’s general meat-grinding ability. Commercial equipment such as Scansteel’s SG line is intended for industrial processing, and its stated applications should be verified with the manufacturer for the intended material and process.
- For any raw-food diet: Treat grinder selection, safe handling, and nutritional formulation as separate questions; an appliance addresses only the mechanical grinding step.
