Repeated noises, droppings, or an animal seen leaving the roof can point to wildlife in an attic, but no single clue reliably identifies the species. Keep people and pets away, avoid touching animals or waste, and confirm what is happening before sealing an opening. A bat in the home or possible contact with one needs prompt advice from animal control or public health.
How can you tell whether an animal is in the attic?
Look for repeated evidence rather than trying to diagnose an animal from one sound, stain, or dropping. Note when noises or sightings occur and, from a safe distance, inspect the outside of the house for possible access points. Do not reach into gaps, move insulation, or enter a confined space to investigate.
- Droppings or gnaw marks: The CDC identifies these as signs of rodent presence, but they do not by themselves establish the exact species or whether an animal is still there. See the CDC rodent guidance.
- Bats seen near the roof: Watching a suspected exit point at dusk can help show where bats leave. The CDC recommends observing exits as part of bat exclusion; do not approach or handle a bat. See CDC bat guidance.
- Unclear signs: Sounds and marks can be ambiguous. If you cannot confidently identify the animal or its route without close contact, ask local animal control, a wildlife agency, or a qualified local wildlife professional for help.
What are the risks, and when is it urgent?
Keep children and pets away from wild animals, their nests, and contaminated areas. Do not handle a live or dead animal, droppings, urine, or nesting material bare-handed; wash your hands after contact with wildlife or places it may have occupied. The right response depends on the animal and the kind of contact, not simply on finding signs in an attic.
If you find a bat inside the home
Do not touch it or release it before getting advice. The CDC advises contacting animal control or the health department for safe capture and testing guidance. Bat bites can be very small and may go unnoticed, so if a person or pet may have had contact, seek prompt guidance from a health professional or local public-health authority. A bat’s presence in an attic alone does not establish that anyone was exposed. Read the CDC bat advice and CDC rabies prevention guidance.

If rodent waste is present
Rodent urine, droppings, and nesting material can expose people through contaminated air or by transferring material to the eyes, nose, or mouth. Do not dry-sweep or vacuum contaminated droppings. Follow the CDC rodent cleanup instructions, including wetting urine and droppings with disinfectant as directed. If contamination is extensive or the animal is uncertain, seek professional advice rather than improvising.
Rabies concern depends on exposure
In the United States, the CDC lists bats, raccoons, skunks, and foxes among wildlife associated with rabies. That does not mean every attic animal has rabies or that attic presence alone is an exposure. Species, location, and the circumstances of contact matter. Discuss a possible bat exposure or wildlife bite or scratch promptly with a health professional or local health department; the CDC provides clinical screening guidance.

How do you get an animal out humanely?
First establish the animal and its entry and exit points. A barrier or one-way device can cause harm if it traps an animal inside or separates young from adults. Wildlife laws, protected-species requirements, and permitted removal seasons vary by location, so check with local authorities before exclusion—particularly if bats or young animals may be involved.
For bats, let them leave before sealing openings
The CDC describes watching at dusk to identify exits, then using an appropriate loose one-way barrier so bats can leave but not return. Confirm that the bats have exited before sealing entry points. Bats can use openings as small as ¼ inch; the CDC says openings larger than a dime can be caulked and gives screens, chimney caps, and draft guards as examples of barriers. Do not bat-proof between May and August if young might be trapped. Some bats are endangered and may need special care, so ask local wildlife authorities about rules and timing. See CDC bat exclusion guidance.

- ONE-WAY EXIT DESIGN - Animals push through the wide end to exit, but the tapered shape narrows toward the outside, making re-entry nearly impossible. The smooth interior prevents bats from gripping the walls to crawl back in. Install at a downward angle so gravity works against them. No flaps or moving parts to fail
- SIZED FOR BATS & SMALL FLYING ANIMALS - Works great for bats, flying squirrels, and similar-sized animals. NOT designed for mice (too small to trigger exit) or gray squirrels (too large, they will push back in). Opening tapers from 2-1/4" to 1-1/2". Know your pest before you buy
- CLEAR POLYCARBONATE CONSTRUCTION - See-through design lets you confirm animals have exited. UV-resistant material stays crystal clear and will not yellow with age. Reusable season after season - just remove, clean, and redeploy at the next location. Made in USA
- NOT FOR GRAY SQUIRRELS - Gray squirrels are too large and strong - they will push their way back through the cone. If you have gray squirrels, check out our larger excluder options or one-way doors instead. This cone is sized for bats and smaller animals only
- SIMPLE INSTALLATION - Mount over the entry hole at a downward angle using 3/8" staples, 1" screws, or silicone caulk. Seal edges with copper mesh or foam backer rod. Leave in place for minimum 3-5 days to ensure all animals have exited, then seal the hole permanently. Do NOT remove during bat birthing season - contact your local wildlife agency for timing
For rodents, prevent re-entry and follow safe control guidance
The CDC recommends sealing holes to prevent new rodent infestations and provides guidance on trapping. It cautions that poison baits can endanger people and animals; if used, they must be used according to label instructions. Follow the agency’s rodent trapping guidance rather than placing poison or traps without considering household members and pets.
Choose exclusion materials for the confirmed animal and opening
Once animals are safely out, use a durable barrier that fits the actual access point. The Humane Society guide describes hardware cloth, vent covers, netting, and one-way doors or excluders that let animals exit but not return. A material that works for one opening or species is not automatically appropriate for another; fit, monitoring, safe installation, and local rules all matter. See the Humane Society wildlife-conflict guide.

- Easy Installation & Effective Results – Simple to mount using sealant or tape (not included). Use multiple tubes for larger infestations to ensure all bats exit quickly and safely.
How can you prevent another attic visit?
After confirming animals are out, repair the access routes with suitable exclusion material and address conditions that make the area accessible or attractive. Inspect vents and other openings from a safe position; use secure screening or covers only when they will not trap wildlife inside. Do not rely on a repellent, sound device, or single material as a solution for every species.
If the species, presence of young, legal requirements, or safe cleanup is uncertain, contact local animal control, the health department, your state wildlife agency, or a qualified local wildlife professional, as appropriate. The CDC’s wildlife guidance offers general precautions for contact with wild animals.
