The work explored sensory processing in a chronic-pain context; the hats were part of a research setup, not a way to diagnose pain at home.
Why were the cats wearing hats?
Electroencephalography (EEG) records electrical activity from the brain through electrodes placed on the scalp. Keeping those electrodes in position on an awake cat proved difficult. Study coauthor Aliénor Delsart explained the practical problem to Futurism: “When you spend more time putting electrodes back on than you do actually recording the EEGs, you get creative,”
The researchers used crocheted caps to help retain the electrodes during recording. The University of Montréal research summary, carried by SciTechDaily, describes EEG testing with awake cats. A New Scientist report likewise describes brain activity recorded with crocheted hats.
What was the study investigating?
The research concerned feline chronic pain and sensory processing, including cats with osteoarthritis. Its paper, “Non-invasive electroencephalography in awake cats: Feasibility and application to sensory processing in chronic pain,” was published in the Journal of Neuroscience Methods on August 22, 2024 (DOI: 10.1016/j.jneumeth.2024.110254).

The University of Montréal summary reports 11 adult cats with osteoarthritis. That figure describes the study group in the 2024 summary; it is not evidence of how well EEG can diagnose pain across cats generally.
Do the hats mean cats can be diagnosed with EEG now?
No. The reports describe a research method for keeping electrodes in place and studying brain signals. They do not establish a finished diagnostic test, validation for routine veterinary use, or that an ordinary pet hat can detect pain.

In the 2024 Futurism report, team lead Éric Troncy described future plans to seek funding to establish an EEG signature for chronic pain. That statement was a plan at the time, not confirmation that funding was awarded or that a validated signature now exists.

No such equivalence is established. Futurism says the team adapted a crocheted cat-hat tutorial, but the reports do not show that consumer hats secure EEG electrodes or have any diagnostic function. A crochet cat hat may be a craft project; it should not be represented as veterinary equipment or a way to assess pain.
