It is approximately 30 million years old—not 15 million. The older figure refers to a span of evolutionary history recorded in the region, not the age of this fossil.
What was the animal?
Bastetodon syrtos was a newly described genus and species in Hyaenodonta, an extinct lineage of mammalian carnivores. Its name identifies the animal represented by the skull; it was not a cat or a member of the modern hyena family.
The fossil is one of the most complete hyaenodont crania recovered from the lower Oligocene Fayum deposits. The formal description by Al-Ashqar and colleagues appeared online in 2025 in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology (study record).
How old is the skull, and where was it found?
The specimen is approximately 30 million years old and comes from lower Oligocene rocks of the Jebel Qatrani Formation, at Quarry I in Egypt’s Fayum Depression. It was recovered during a 2020 expedition; Nature Africa reports that the nearly complete skull was found at the end of that expedition (Nature Africa report).

- SET OF 6 PREHISTORIC SKULLS || Set of six prehistoric skulls. Consists of Afarenis cranium, Africanus cranium, Habilis cranium, Erectus cranium, Neanderthalensis cranial and Steinheim skull
- LIFE SIZED || Each prehistoric skull is approx. 10" in size
- INCREDIBLE REALISM || Models are hand painted. Realistic details, textures and bony landmarks provide an incredible amount of realism for examining Neanderthal skulls
- DURABLE POLYMER CONSTRUCTION || Made of durable and sturdy plastisol polymer. This washable model is easy to clean and will hold up to years of handling
The 15-million-year figure in some coverage describes the approximate span of evolutionary history represented by the Fayum record. It should not be read as the age of Bastetodon or its skull (Taylor & Francis Newsroom).
What makes it a hypercarnivore?
The designation rests on the skull’s anatomy, especially its teeth. The preserved upper tooth row includes a long shearing metastyle and reduced protocones shifted toward the front of the tooth. The study interprets this combination as evidence of specialization for eating meat.

Far more interesting than another generic sculpture - and a fraction of what a professional museum cast would cost.
Its robust zygomatic arches—the cheek arches that anchor jaw muscles—also indicate substantial chewing musculature. Together, the dental pattern and skull structure support an inference that Bastetodon was a powerful meat-eater. They do not establish exactly which animals it killed or scavenged.
What did Bastetodon eat?
The evidence supports a meat-specialized diet, but the skull does not identify a confirmed menu or a specific prey species. Reports have discussed large mammals in the ancient ecosystem, including elephants, hippopotamuses, and primates, as possible prey. Those are ecological possibilities, not proof that this individual hunted or ate any of them.

How does the discovery change what scientists know?
The study does more than name a new animal. It also reevaluates African hyaenodont fossils previously assigned to Pterodon and proposes Sekhmetops as a genus for some of that material. That taxonomic revision helps distinguish fossils that had been grouped under an earlier name.
The skull’s unusually complete preservation gives researchers a clearer basis for comparing teeth and skull anatomy than fragmentary remains allow. Nature Africa quotes lead author Shorouq Al-Ashqar describing it as “a nearly complete skull of an ancient apex carnivore, a dream for any vertebrate paleontologist” (Nature Africa report).
