A two-year-old in Crossford, Scotland, reportedly found a stone containing a fossilized root while playing in his family’s garden. His father identified it as Stigmaria, a plant fossil from the Carboniferous, and the account gives it an approximate age of 300 million years. The identification and age come from a news report, not a documented independent scientific examination.

What happened in the garden?

Daily Galaxy reported on September 20, 2025, that Fletcher Low found the unusual stone while playing outdoors with his younger brother at the family home in Crossford. According to the account, his father, David Low—a former geography teacher—rinsed the stone and recognized a fossilized root. The report says the find was accidental; it does not describe an excavation or the use of fossil-hunting equipment.

Daily Galaxy attributed the story to the Dunfermline Press, but the local paper’s linked article was not accessible. The circumstances are therefore best understood as a reported family account rather than independently corroborated details. Daily Galaxy’s September 20, 2025 report

What is Stigmaria?

Stigmaria is the name given to fossilized roots associated with ancient plants. In this report, the term describes the root-like feature David Low recognized in the stone. The report places the specimen in the Carboniferous and calls it roughly 300 million years old; it does not provide a formal dating method or a more precise age.

Has the fossil been scientifically confirmed?

The accessible account does not document an examination by a specialist, a museum accession, or independent confirmation of either the identification or the age. That does not establish that the identification is wrong; it means those claims should be attributed to the news report and family account, rather than presented as verified scientific findings.

No named scientific organization’s statistic or independently verified specialist quotation accompanies the accessible account. David Low is quoted in it as saying, “I like good looking rocks”, but the original Dunfermline Press article was not available to check that quotation directly.

Why is the find notable?

The appeal is the contrast between ordinary childhood play and a stone reported to preserve evidence of ancient plant life. A child did not need a fossil-hunting kit or specialist tools for the reported discovery: the key moment, as described, was his father rinsing the stone and noticing the feature.
