Its beige-gray fur, rounded ears, fluffy tail and coyote-sized appearance prompted guesses about wolves, coyotes and dogs, but no genetic sample or later sighting established what it was.
What animal was caught on camera?
There is no confirmed answer. A January 22, 2025, report by The Daily Galaxy described footage released on November 5, without specifying the year in the relevant passage. It attributed the footage to a Voyageurs Wolf Project trail camera and reported that the animal passed through the area in winter.
The report described light beige-gray fur, rounded ears and a fluffy tail. It appeared similar to a coyote in size and general look, while its ears and heavier build suggested wolf or domestic-dog traits. Those are visual impressions from footage, not diagnostic evidence of species or ancestry.
Could it have been a wolf, coyote or dog?
The visible cues do not settle the question. The report says project lead Thomas Gable considered a pure wolf unlikely, but it does not provide measurements, a detailed morphological analysis or genetic results that would establish another identity.
#1 Best Overall
- Wolf: Gable reportedly thought a pure wolf was unlikely; that assessment does not identify the animal as something else.
- Coyote: The animal was described as coyote-like in size and overall appearance, but resemblance alone is not confirmation.
- Domestic dog or a mix: Its build and ears led to speculation about dog ancestry, including a possible wolf–coyote–dog mix. No evidence confirmed a crossbreed.
Why is its identity still unknown?
According to the report, the animal was not seen again on the project’s cameras and no genetic sample was collected. Gable was quoted as saying, “Ultimately, we won’t ever know for sure one way or another because the animal just passed through our area in winter, and we haven’t seen it on any trail camera since then, so we cannot get a genetic sample or anything like that to tell one way or another.” That quote is reproduced as reported by The Daily Galaxy; a primary transcript or recording was not available in the reviewed sources.
That leaves the sighting unresolved, rather than proving the animal could never be identified if new evidence emerged.
What about “woyote dog” and the frostbite theory?
“Woyote dog” and “Yotedoodle” were playful names reported around the sighting, not scientific identifications. A suggestion that frostbite might explain the unusual ears was also unconfirmed. Neither the proposed mix nor the frostbite explanation should be treated as a finding.

The Voyageurs Wolf Project studies wolf ecology in Minnesota’s Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem and pairs research with outreach and education. That work provides context for why trail-camera footage was gathered in the region; the project’s home page does not identify this particular animal.
