The moth was identified as Endoxyla cinereus. “Rat-sized” is a vivid impression, not a literal measurement: females can weigh up to 30 grams and have a wingspan of up to 25 centimetres.
What moth was found at the school?
The insect was a giant wood moth, Endoxyla cinereus, one of Australia’s largest moths. ABC News reported the discovery at Mount Cotton State School, south-east of Brisbane, on May 5, 2021. Builders photographed the moth and returned it to nearby rainforest vegetation. The story was retold in 2025, which can make the sighting seem more recent than it was. ABC News’ 2021 report describes the find and its setting.
School principal Megan Steward said staff and students were used to seeing wildlife on the grounds, but had not seen that moth before. The encounter was unusual, not evidence that the species had only just appeared in the area.
How big is a giant wood moth?
Queensland Government information gives a maximum wingspan of 25 centimetres and a body mass of 30 grams. The Australian Museum lists 23 centimetres as the species’ size in its fast facts, while also reporting that females can weigh up to 30 grams. These figures use different size descriptions; the 25-centimetre figure is explicitly a wingspan, not body length. Business Queensland’s giant wood moth profile and the Australian Museum species profile provide the measurements.

Calling it “rat-sized” conveys how bulky the moth can look, but it should not be read as a claim that its body is as long as a rat. Wingspan, mass and body length describe different dimensions; the available figures above do not establish a rat-like body length. Queensland Museum also describes the species as exceptionally heavy for a moth in its Meet the Giants feature.
Why is the moth rarely seen?
Most of its life is spent as a larva
The conspicuous adult is only a brief part of the life cycle. Giant wood moth larvae are associated with trees; Queensland Government information says they bore into smooth-barked eucalypts. In ABC’s 2021 report, entomologist Ted Edwards described the larvae as remaining in gum trees for two or three years. That duration is a reported account, not a fixed schedule established for every individual. ABC News quotes Edwards, and Business Queensland describes the tree association.

The adult stage is short and does not involve feeding
Adult giant wood moths do not feed, and the adult stage lasts only a few days, according to the Australian Museum and Queensland Museum. A large insect can therefore be easy to miss: the longer larval phase is largely hidden in or around trees, while the adult is present for a short time. The 2022 peer-reviewed review of the species’ life history and ecology discusses what is known and the limits of current understanding: Thurman, “Beyond the pest”.
Can a giant wood moth fly?
Queensland Museum entomologist Dr Christine Lambkin told ABC that females fly very poorly and often crawl up a nearby tree or fence post to wait for males. That describes a common behavior, not proof that the particular moth found at Mount Cotton was unable to fly. ABC News’ interview reports Lambkin’s explanation.

How many eggs does it lay?
The Australian Museum reports that a heavy female lays about 20,000 tiny eggs. This is a species-level figure; it is not a count from the Mount Cotton moth. The brief adult stage and large egg estimate are compatible: adults do not feed, and their role includes reproduction rather than a long period of feeding and growth.

The headline’s lamp wording is a joke about the moth’s dramatic appearance, not a practical claim about lighting or a scientific size category. The useful measurements are wingspan and mass, and the sighting that prompted the headline was a documented 2021 school encounter. Neither the reported size nor rarity alone establishes that the species is threatened or that climate change is accelerating its development.
