The “doomsday fish” association is folklore; accounts from Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Los Angeles Times say a 2019 study found no correlation between oarfish or ribbonfish strandings and earthquakes in Japan. Why this California fish died or surfaced remains unknown.
What was the rare fish found in California?
It was a short-crested oarfish (Regalecus russellii). On August 10, 2024, the dead fish surfaced at La Jolla Cove and was recovered with help from local kayakers and snorkelers. Scripps researchers and colleagues identified it as an adult male in good condition, measuring 12.25 feet (3.735 meters) and weighing 74.3 pounds (33.7 kilograms). Researchers did not determine why it died. Scripps Institution of Oceanography described the specimen and its examination on August 22, 2024.
Scripps counted the La Jolla specimen as California’s twentieth documented oarfish stranding since 1901 at the time of its report. In November 2024, the Los Angeles Times reported three Southern California strandings in the preceding three months—in La Jolla, Huntington Beach, and Grandview Beach near Encinitas—and gave the statewide count as 22 since 1901. These are counts reported at different dates, not a current total. The Times’ November 21, 2024, account covers the later cluster.
Does an oarfish mean an earthquake is coming?
No reliable prediction follows from this sighting. Oarfish have been linked in folklore with earthquakes, disease, and other misfortunes. Their great length, silvery ribbon-like bodies, and red crests have also helped fuel sea-serpent stories. Those associations explain the “doomsday fish” nickname; they do not establish that an oarfish can forecast a disaster.

Scripps and the Los Angeles Times report that a 2019 study found no correlation between oarfish or ribbonfish strandings and earthquakes in Japan. The Times also reports that researchers examined possible associations with tsunamis and other factors and found no correlation. The accessible accounts do not provide the study’s methods or sample size, so they do not support stronger claims about what it tested or how it reached its result.
In the Times’ November 2024 report, Cal State Fullerton associate professor Misty Paig-Tran suggested that earthquake-related pressure or current changes could conceivably affect deep-water fish. That is a possible mechanism, not evidence of prediction; she characterized the California sightings as probably not heralding a major earthquake. The report puts that suggestion in context with the findings on strandings and earthquakes.

Why might an oarfish wash ashore?
The cause of the La Jolla fish’s death and surfacing was not established. Scripps says injury, illness, or disorientation are possible contributors to strandings in general, not confirmed explanations for this individual fish. It also notes that two underwater canyons near La Jolla Shores bring deep water close to shore, which may help explain why disoriented or injured deep-sea fish sometimes appear there.
The later Times report raised changing ocean conditions and increased numbers of oarfish off the coast as possibilities, while describing currents, a weak El Niño, red tide, and Santa Ana winds as context around the sightings. No cause was established, and those conditions should not be read as proof of what brought the fish ashore.
