The “17-minute frenzy” was Michigan’s 2025 special lake-sturgeon season on Black Lake, which opened at 8 a.m. and ended at 8:17 a.m. The next season, in 2026, lasted 48 minutes and ended after six fish were harvested. Both were tightly managed winter fisheries—not evidence that lake sturgeon are literally as old as dinosaurs or that a short season proves the population is fully recovered.
What happened at Black Lake in 2026?
Michigan’s 2026 Black Lake season opened at 8 a.m. on Feb. 7 and ended 48 minutes later, after six lake sturgeon were harvested. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reported 679 registered anglers. The harvested fish ranged from 52.9 to 67.2 inches long and 40.4 to 79.4 pounds. These are figures for the 2026 event, not estimates of the lake’s sturgeon population. Michigan DNR’s 2026 results
The event had been scheduled for Feb. 7–11, with fishing allowed from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day or until closure conditions were met. The DNR announcement said the season would close after the sixth fish was harvested, or if five fish had been harvested by the end of a fishing day. The results release distinguishes that six-fish harvest limit from a season quota of seven sturgeon allocated under an agreement with tribal governments to account for possible near-simultaneous harvests. The legal harvest limit should not be described as seven. Michigan DNR’s 2026 season announcement Michigan DNR’s results
Why did Michigan’s 2025 sturgeon season last only 17 minutes?
The 2025 Black Lake season opened at 8 a.m. on Feb. 1 and closed at 8:17 a.m., when the seventh fish was registered. The DNR’s 2026 announcement reported the 17-minute duration; Outdoor Life reported 797 registrants for the 2025 event. Those registrant counts come from different sources and years, so they should not be treated as a direct measure of changes in fish abundance. Registration and rapid reporting help officials keep track of harvest as it happens. Outdoor Life quoted Jay Woiderski, president of the Black Lake Chapter of Sturgeon for Tomorrow, describing the process: “Every fisherman must send DNR a text when they spear and land a sturgeon … and when the seven fish limit is reached, the DNR immediately texts all registered anglers.” The quotation describes the 2025 event; the seven-fish figure in that account should not be confused with the six-fish legal harvest limit specified in the 2026 announcement. Outdoor Life
How does the special Black Lake fishery work?
This is a limited, specially regulated season rather than an open-ended opportunity to spear sturgeon. The 2026 event required online registration and set a brief daily fishing window, subject to early closure. Anyone considering participation should confirm the current season’s details on the DNR Black Lake event page before making plans.

Registration, license and harvest reporting
- Anglers had to register online for the event. Participants age 17 or older needed a valid Michigan fishing license.
- Harvested fish had to be reported immediately to DNR personnel and registered at the on-site trailer.
- The DNR says registration may include an internal examination and removal of fin tissue for DNA analysis or aging.
Shanty flags and ice safety
- Event instructions required bright red flagging at least one foot in diameter on each fishing shanty. Anglers were to remove the flagging when the season ended.
- The DNR warned that ice conditions can vary greatly and urged extreme caution. It said the season could be canceled up to 48 hours before opening if circumstances created a significant risk to safe and effective implementation.
- The event announcement does not establish a universal safe ice-thickness threshold. Check current DNR safety guidance and conditions rather than relying on a single number.
Do Black Lake sturgeon rules apply across Michigan?
No. The special Black Lake season is a limited exception, not a statewide spearing season. Michigan’s 2026 fishing regulations say lake-sturgeon spearing is generally prohibited except during the special Black Lake winter season. They require harvested Black Lake sturgeon to be reported immediately on site, limit lake-sturgeon harvest to one per angler per year, and state that there is no fishing season for lake sturgeon on other waters. Regulations can change; consult the current Michigan fishing regulations and the DNR’s Black Lake page before acting.
What does “dinosaur fish” mean—and how old are lake sturgeon?
“Dinosaur fish” is a colorful nickname, not a claim that an individual sturgeon lived in the age of dinosaurs. The available DNR species information supports facts about lake-sturgeon life history, but does not establish an evolutionary-age figure for this article. It does show why their reproduction is slow: females typically mature between 14 and 33 years, most often at 24 to 26, while males mature at 12 to 17 years. Females generally spawn every three to seven years and males every one to four years. These are species-level facts, not estimates specific to Black Lake. Michigan DNR’s lake-sturgeon species page

Lake sturgeon feed on bottom-dwelling prey such as insect larvae, crayfish, snails, clams and leeches, according to the DNR. Their late maturity and infrequent spawning make protection and recovery a long-term undertaking.

The DNR attributes Black Lake’s population increase over the past 20 years to collaboration with Sturgeon for Tomorrow, tribal agencies, Michigan State University and Tower-Kleber Limited Partnership. Its account cites rearing and stocking, research, and protection of spawning adults. The 2026 results release also names tribal partners. A brief harvest shows how quickly a limited allocation can be reached; by itself, it does not establish that the population is fully recovered. In a separate context, Patrick Wilson’s Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Nmé (Lake Sturgeon) Stewardship Plan for the Big Manistee River and 1836 Reservation is quoted by the DNR: “Bringing back the sturgeon is bringing back our cultural heritage.” That statement concerns the stewardship plan and Big Manistee River context, not the Black Lake season.
