A sea otter appears to bring a rock within a fisherman’s reach, then take it back. The Daily Galaxy reported that sequence in a clip described as filmed near a California dock—but the apparent “gift” is an interpretation, not proof of what the otter intended. An ethologist cited in the report suggested the animal may simply have set down its rock while preparing to climb onto the dock.
What happened in the sea otter clip?
A January 31, 2025, report by The Daily Galaxy describes a sea otter near a California dock bringing a rock close to a fisherman and later reclaiming it. The article says the clip was posted by TikTok account @user8736150399263.
The original post, its date and location, and the fisherman’s account were not independently authenticated in the reporting available here. The sequence should therefore be treated as a publisher’s account of a social-media video, not as a verified record of the encounter.
Was the rock really a gift?
There is no way to establish the otter’s intent from the reported sequence alone. The Daily Galaxy attributes a more cautious possibility to ethologist Margherita Bandini: the otter may have put down its rock while getting ready to climb onto the dock. If so, the moment that looks like a handoff would have been incidental rather than a deliberate offer to the fisherman.

The report also attributes this comment to Bandini, identified there as an ethologist and deputy chair of the IUCN SSC Otter Specialist Group, speaking to The Dodo: “The best rocks are the ones that help open prey more efficiently. They can be used until a better one is found.” The quotation is reproduced as The Daily Galaxy printed it; the original interview was not separately verified.
Why do sea otters carry rocks?
Rock use is established sea otter behavior, regardless of what happened in this clip. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service species profile describes sea otters using rocks as hammers or anvils to open hard-shelled prey. An otter may carry a useful tool and use it repeatedly, or replace it when a more effective one is available. That general behavior explains why an otter might have a rock nearby; it cannot reveal why this individual set one down.

The same agency profile says sea otters consume about 25 percent of their body mass per day, reflecting their high energetic needs. That figure describes the species’ feeding needs, not anything measured in the video.
Are sea otters friendly to people?
A close approach can look curious or playful to a person, but it is not evidence that a wild otter is seeking friendship or contact. The clip’s apparent interaction should not be taken as an invitation to approach, touch, feed, or handle an otter. Keep the animal’s space and ability to move freely in mind, even when it seems calm.

What to do if you see a sea otter near a dock or kayak
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s ethical viewing guidance, published August 7, 2023, recommends giving sea otters room and avoiding actions that change their behavior.
- If an otter notices you, back away rather than moving closer.
- From a kayak, stay at least 60 feet away—the agency’s recommended minimum, also described as five kayak lengths—and pass parallel to the otter.
- Never feed an otter.
- Keep pets from interacting with otters.
The agency warns that close approaches that alter an otter’s behavior may violate applicable protections. Whether a particular encounter does so depends on its location and circumstances; the practical choice is to keep your distance.
