Under some conditions, an adult medusa can reorganize through a cyst-like stage and return to an earlier polyp stage. That is a reversal in biological development—not literal time travel, and not proof that an individual cannot die.
Which creature is called the immortal jellyfish?
Turritopsis dohrnii is a hydrozoan: a small marine animal with a life cycle that includes a free-swimming adult medusa and a colony-forming polyp stage. The nickname “immortal jellyfish” refers to its reported ability to reverse from the medusa toward the polyp stage.
The foundational 1996 report of this reversal was published under the name Turritopsis nutricula. That is the name used in that paper; later studies examining the species discussed here identify it as T. dohrnii. The historical naming should not be treated as proof that those names are universally interchangeable.
What does “time travel” mean in this headline?
It is a metaphor for reverse development. Rather than traveling through time, the adult medusa changes its form and developmental state, moving back toward an earlier stage in its life cycle. A 2021 gene-expression study describes the medusa-to-polyp reversal as passing through an intermediate cyst stage. The animal is not an adult becoming younger in the ordinary sense; it is reorganizing into an earlier life-cycle form.

The 1996 paper reported that medusae—including sexually mature individuals—could transform back into colonial hydroids, either directly or after a resting period. Its authors called the capacity “potential immortality,” a careful qualification rather than a claim that the animals are indestructible.
Does the jellyfish live forever?
No such conclusion follows from the reversal. “Potential immortality” describes the possibility of returning to an earlier stage instead of following a one-way progression toward death from aging. It does not mean an individual is invulnerable, guaranteed to reverse, or demonstrated to survive forever. The 1996 finding was about a life-cycle capacity, not a guarantee of endless life.

What have scientists learned about how reversal works?
Researchers have examined changes in gene expression across life-cycle stages and compared the genome of T. dohrnii with that of Turritopsis rubra, which the comparative study describes as nonimmortal. These studies offer clues about biological processes associated with reversal, but they do not establish a single, complete “immortality switch” that explains every step.
The molecular findings concern these marine animals. They do not show that the same process could make humans immortal or provide a treatment for aging.

Is reverse development unique to this jellyfish?
No. A 2024 report described reverse development in Mnemiopsis leidyi, a ctenophore, or comb jelly—not a true jellyfish. In the reported experiment, a mature lobate form returned to an earlier cydippid form following a period of stress when fed. That is a separate species and a different reported life-cycle transition; the finding does not establish that it uses the same mechanism as T. dohrnii.
| Animal | Animal group | Reported reversal | Reported context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turritopsis dohrnii | Hydrozoan cnidarian | Adult medusa toward an earlier polyp stage, with an intermediate cyst stage described in later work | Life-cycle reversal reported in the foundational literature and studied in later molecular work |
| Mnemiopsis leidyi | Ctenophore (comb jelly) | Mature lobate form to earlier cydippid form | Reported in a 2024 experiment after stress when fed |
The comparison does not establish how often either reversal occurs in nature, that the two animals reverse by the same process, or that either can live indefinitely.
