The report identifies the fish only as Macrourus and the copepods as female Lophoura szidati. Their heads were described as embedded in the fish, with their rear sections and egg sacs visible outside it. The sighting is striking, but the observation-specific details come from secondary reporting rather than a located official dive record.
What the footage reportedly showed
Daily Galaxy reported that the fish was filmed at 489 meters (1,604 feet) near the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic. It identified the fish as belonging to the genus Macrourus, a group commonly called rattails or grenadiers, and did not name a particular fish species. The report described two female Lophoura szidati copepods attached to it.
According to the account, each parasite’s head was embedded in fish tissue while the rear portion protruded. The report calls the copepods mesoparasites—organisms partly inside and partly outside their host. These identification, location, and depth details should be understood as claims in the report: no official dive log, footage caption, specimen record, or taxonomic note confirming this individual observation was located.
Schmidt Ocean Institute’s May 15, 2025, account of South Sandwich Islands expedition work and its April 15, 2025, report involving ROV SuBastian on a regional expedition provide exploration context. They do not independently verify this rattail, the copepod identification, or the reported depth.

What are the parasites attached to the rattail?
The report identifies them as female Lophoura szidati, a species of parasitic copepod. James Bernot, described by Daily Galaxy as an evolutionary biologist at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, explained how they feed: “They feed on blood and fluids from their host using their scraping mouth parts that are embedded in the muscle of the fish.” This is Bernot’s statement as quoted in Daily Galaxy, not a direct quotation verified against a recording or transcript.
That feeding description helps explain why the animals appear partly embedded. It does not establish what condition this particular fish was in, whether it was harmed in a lasting way, or what happened to it after filming.

What are the long sacs hanging from the copepods?
Daily Galaxy describes the dangling, pig-tail-like structures as egg sacs on the copepods’ rear sections. The report says eggs hatch into swimming nauplius larvae, which molt through developmental stages before finding a host. That account describes a life cycle; it does not show that larvae from these particular egg sacs hatched or reached another fish.
How deep was the fish filmed?
The reported depth is 489 meters (1,604 feet). Daily Galaxy also gives 400–3,185 meters as a general depth range for Macrourus species; that range is not a measurement of this individual fish’s habitat or of the filming location. Both figures come from the secondary report, and the sighting depth has not been independently confirmed by a primary record located for this account.

What this sighting does—and does not—show
The report describes a vivid example of a deep-sea fish carrying externally visible parasites that are partly embedded in its tissue. It does not establish that the footage captured a new species, the first such encounter, or a representative pattern across rattails. Nor do the cited accounts show that these copepods pose a danger to people or threaten rattail populations. Those broader claims would require evidence beyond this reported observation.
