The claim appears to conflate Yukon’s rich record of steppe-bison fossils with two different finds: Nun cho ga, a woolly mammoth recovered in Yukon and estimated to be over 30,000 years old, and Blue Babe, a mummified steppe bison found in Alaska.
What bison fossils have actually been found in Yukon?
Yukon has an extensive Ice Age fossil record. The Government of Yukon’s fossil collection contains more than 35,000 specimens, including bones, teeth and horns; steppe bison are among its most commonly represented animals. Rare mummified carcasses can preserve soft tissue such as hair, skin and muscle, but the collection’s breadth does not confirm the specific 30,000-year-old bison carcass described in the claim. Government of Yukon: Access the Yukon fossil collection.
The Ch’ijee Bluff bison fossil
A well-documented Yukon bison discovery is a fossil found at Ch’ijee Bluff in 2006. In a 2017 release, the Government of Yukon and Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation gave its age as 130,000 years. It is a fossil specimen, not a reported mummified carcass. The release said it was the oldest reliably dated bison in North America at that time. It belongs to the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation collection and is housed at the Arctic Research Facility in Old Crow. Government of Yukon and Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation, 2017.
Yukon bison finds are not limited to that fossil. A Canadian Museum of Nature account of 2022 Yukon fieldwork reports collecting a complete bison femur, but does not describe an intact or mummified carcass. Canadian Museum of Nature, 2023.

Which Yukon animal was estimated to be over 30,000 years old?
It was Nun cho ga, a woolly mammoth—not a bison. The near-complete mummified baby mammoth was recovered in the Klondike in 2022, and geologists estimated it to be over 30,000 years old. That is the well-publicized Yukon carcass that most closely matches the age and preservation details in the claim. Government of Yukon: Nun cho ga announcement.
Where was the famous mummified Ice Age bison found?
Blue Babe, a mummified steppe bison, was discovered by gold miners near Fairbanks, Alaska, in 1979. The University of Alaska Museum of the North reports that its collagen was originally dated to about 36,000 years ago. Its July 2014 account noted that updated accelerator-mass-spectrometry dating was then underway, so about 36,000 years is the original reported estimate, not a confirmed result of that later analysis. Blue Babe was found in Alaska, not Yukon. University of Alaska Museum of the North: Blue Babe.

How common were steppe bison in Yukon?
The Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre says more than 80 per cent of Yukon Ice Age mammal fossils are estimated to belong to steppe bison. The Government of Yukon also reported in 2017 that small steppe-bison populations persisted in the territory until as recently as 400 years ago. These facts explain why bison fossils are prominent in Yukon collections, but they do not establish a particular preserved carcass matching the title’s claim. Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre: Steppe Bison; Government of Yukon and Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation, 2017.
Present-day Yukon bison should not be treated as direct descendants of Ice Age steppe bison: the Beringia Interpretive Centre says modern bison in the territory were reintroduced in the 1970s. Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre.

Why the distinction matters
Permafrost can preserve animals and their soft tissues, while many fossil finds consist of individual bones or teeth. Species, location, find type and age all matter when identifying a discovery. Here, the confirmed examples are distinct: a 130,000-year-old bison fossil from Ch’ijee Bluff in Yukon, the over-30,000-year-old mammoth Nun cho ga from Yukon, and the originally dated, mummified bison Blue Babe from Alaska. None confirms a 30,000-year-old bison carcass found in Yukon.
