Later that August, Michigan confirmed EEE in a Clare County horse. The state’s chief medical executive described EEE as “one of the most dangerous mosquito-borne diseases in the U.S.” That is an official characterization of mosquito-borne diseases—not a measured ranking of every summer hazard in Michigan.
Is EEE back in Michigan?
Yes. On August 19, 2026, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) reported a locally acquired human EEE case in a Roscommon County resident. It was Michigan’s first reported human case since 2021. At that time, the state said it had not detected animal EEE activity that year and was increasing mosquito trapping and testing in Roscommon County. MDHHS’s August 19 announcement describes that detection.
On August 31, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) confirmed the year’s first domestic-animal case: an under-vaccinated, one-year-old Quarter Horse colt in Clare County. The horse received specialty care and was humanely euthanized. Michigan says EEE cases typically occur in late summer to early fall. These dated reports do not show the full county-by-county picture today; check Michigan’s weekly arboviral surveillance updates for later detections. MDARD’s August 31 announcement gives details of the horse case.
What is EEE, and how does it affect people and horses?
EEE is a viral illness transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. People do not catch it directly from an infected horse, and horses do not transmit it to one another; infected mosquitoes spread the virus to both people and animals.

Human symptoms can include fever, headache, chills, and nausea. Severe disease can cause inflammation of the brain, disorientation, seizures, and coma. The CDC says approximately 30% of people who develop severe EEE die, and many survivors have ongoing neurologic problems. This statistic applies to people who develop severe illness, not to every mosquito bite or infection. There is no vaccine to prevent human EEE and no medicine that treats it, although Michigan notes that clinicians can test for EEE and other arboviruses. Read the CDC’s overview of EEE.
How can I protect my family from mosquito bites?
Choose and use repellent carefully
MDHHS recommends EPA-registered repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, or 2-undecanone. Follow the product label, including instructions for where and how to apply it and when to reapply. The EPA advises choosing a product based on whether you need protection from mosquitoes, ticks, or both, and how long you expect to be exposed. Its product listings are informational, not endorsements; consult its repellent selection guidance rather than treating any one brand as best.

Do not apply repellent to children under two months old. MDHHS advises dressing infants in clothing that covers their arms and legs and using mosquito netting over a crib, stroller, or carrier.
Reduce exposure at home and outdoors
- Wear shoes and socks, light-colored long pants, and long sleeves.
- Keep door and window screens in good repair and fitted tightly.
- Use a bed net when sleeping outdoors or in a place without screens.
- At least weekly, empty standing water from birdbaths, pools, tires, and other containers where mosquitoes can breed.
How can I protect horses and other pets?
For horses, ask a veterinarian about EEE and West Nile vaccination. MDARD also advises removing standing water, sheltering livestock under fans, and using only repellents approved for animals. Keep pets indoors during peak mosquito activity from dusk to dawn when practical. These measures reduce exposure; they do not guarantee that an animal will not be bitten.
