No—not according to the experiment behind the headline. In a 2019 deep-sea study, researchers found bone-eating Osedax worms on alligator bones after the carcass’s soft tissue was gone. The study did not show the worms rapidly eating whole alligators: scavenging, tissue loss, and the discovery of worms happened on different timelines.
What happened to the alligators?
Researchers lowered three American alligator carcasses (Alligator mississippiensis) to sites about 1,996–2,181 metres deep in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The experiment, published in PLOS ONE in 2019, produced three different outcomes—not one shared “devoured in a flash” timeline. Read the study.
| Carcass | Elapsed time | What researchers observed |
|---|---|---|
| One alligator | 43 hours after deployment | Scavengers were feeding on it. |
| Another alligator | 51 days after deployment | Its soft tissue was gone. Osedax worms were found on the recovered bones. |
| Third alligator | Missing by day eight | The harness and weight were about eight metres away, with evidence the carcass had been dragged. The authors suggested a large elasmobranch—a group that includes sharks and rays—may have taken it. |
The 43-hour observation was scavenging, not proof that Osedax had consumed an alligator. The worms were documented on bones recovered after 51 days, once the second carcass’s soft tissue had disappeared. The observations show that several scavengers and different processes were involved.
What are “zombie worms,” and what do they eat?
“Zombie worm” is a nickname for Osedax, a genus of deep-sea annelid worms often called bone-eating worms. They have no mouth or stomach. Smithsonian Ocean explains that they dissolve bone to access fats and proteins; symbiotic bacteria in their bodies digest those nutrients, although the precise transfer of nutrients from the bacteria to the worm was described as not fully understood. They are not simply eating the mineral part of a skeleton. Smithsonian Ocean’s overview explains how Osedax feed.

Osedax were first reported on whale bones, but observations also include fish and cow bones. The alligator study reported them on alligator bones in the Gulf of Mexico. It does not establish that the worms are alligator specialists: the study also noted that this form was absent from cow bones deployed at a similar depth.
Were the alligator worms a new species?
The 2019 authors described the Gulf of Mexico form they observed as new to science. That is a report about the form found in their study, not evidence that all Osedax live on alligators or that the worms rapidly consume whole carcasses. The finding was on bones after soft tissue loss.

Why put alligators on the deep seafloor?
A large carcass reaching the deep ocean can deliver a concentrated supply of organic matter to a place where such food falls are unusual. The experiment showed that reptile remains can be used by deep-sea scavengers and that alligator bones can host Osedax. It also demonstrated why timing matters: scavenging was seen within 43 hours on one carcass, while soft-tissue loss and worms on bones were recorded at the 51-day visit on another.
What a separate whale-bone experiment found in 2025
In a separate experiment off British Columbia, Ocean Networks Canada reported in October 2025 that high-resolution cameras did not detect Osedax colonization on humpback whale bones at Barkley Canyon during ten years of observation. The bones were placed nearly 1,000 metres deep at a site with naturally low oxygen. Ocean Networks Canada scientist Fabio De Leo called it “a remarkable observation in such a long-term experiment” and said low oxygen may help explain the absence. Ocean Networks Canada describes the observation.

The report raises the possibility that expanding ocean oxygen minimum zones could disrupt whale-fall ecosystems, but the observation is not proof of a region-wide, climate-driven loss of Osedax. Craig Smith, professor emeritus at the University of Hawaii, offered this interpretation: “It looks like the OMZ expansion, which is a consequence of ocean warming, will be bad news for these amazing whale-fall and wood-fall ecosystems along the northeast Pacific Margin.”

No. The striking result is that scavengers rapidly reached one carcass, while Osedax were later found on the bones of another after its soft tissue was gone. The study supports a story about deep-sea scavenging and bone colonization—not worms consuming whole alligators in a matter of hours.
