A female Arctic fox was brought to Bird Alliance of Oregon’s Wildlife Care Center on October 12, 2024. The organization said she was thin and dehydrated but otherwise in good health. How she got to Portland remains unknown; the available reports do not establish that she escaped or was abandoned.
What happened to the Arctic fox in Portland?
Bird Alliance of Oregon said the fox arrived at its Wildlife Care Center on Saturday, October 12, 2024. The center identified her as a female Arctic fox, a species that is not native to Oregon. She weighed 6½ pounds and was thin and dehydrated, but otherwise in good health. Staff provided food, fluids and enrichment. Bird Alliance of Oregon’s account describes her intake and care.
Where did she come from?
Bird Alliance said it did not know where the fox came from or how she reached Portland. The center believed she had lived in captivity because she did not show a species-appropriate fear response and approached people. That behavior informed the organization’s assessment; it does not identify a former owner or prove how she arrived.
Wildlife Care Center Manager Ashley Lema said, “We believe the fox either accidentally escaped from captivity or was intentionally dumped by the people who illegally held her.” The wording matters: Bird Alliance presented escape and dumping as possibilities, not confirmed events. The available statement does not resolve her origin.

Oregon Zoo reported on November 13, 2024 that the fox had arrived from Bird Alliance on November 8 and was due to travel to a new home in Wisconsin, where she would join a male companion. The zoo’s update does not name the Wisconsin facility. It describes a placement plan as of the date of that release, rather than documenting a later arrival.
