The tooth belonged to a large marine reptile from about 66 million years ago, near the end of the Cretaceous. The finding supports the idea that this mosasaur inhabited freshwater—not merely that its tooth washed into a river deposit—but it does not reveal the animal’s exact route or behavior.
How did a mosasaur tooth end up in a river deposit?
The fossil comes from the Hell Creek Formation in North Dakota, a deposit formed in a riverine environment. Its fossil assemblage includes a Tyrannosaurus rex tooth, a crocodylian jaw and Edmontosaurus bones. A mosasaur was a marine reptile, so the tooth’s presence in this setting raised a basic question: did it arrive there accidentally, or had the animal lived in freshwater?
The study addressed that question by analyzing chemical isotope signatures preserved in the tooth. Its results are consistent with freshwater conditions, supporting freshwater habitation rather than relying on the tooth’s location alone. The primary study is published in BMC Zoology; Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam’s 2025 summary explains the finding for a general audience.
What the isotope evidence shows
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam reports that the tooth recorded freshwater conditions across three isotope systems. Isotopes are forms of the same element that differ in mass; their patterns can preserve clues about the water and environment an animal encountered. In this case, the university says the combined freshwater signatures indicate habitation in freshwater.

The study also reports similar freshwater signatures in two other mosasaur teeth from nearby North Dakota localities. Those additional teeth make a single accidental occurrence or brief seasonal visit less persuasive as an explanation. They support the conclusion that mosasaurs inhabited freshwater environments in this region, though the evidence does not reconstruct particular journeys, feeding events or other day-to-day behavior.
Which mosasaur was it, and how large?
The tooth is identified as belonging to a prognathodontid mosasaur, but it cannot be assigned confidently to a genus. The finding therefore does not identify a specific named genus for this individual.

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam reports a tooth-based estimate of up to 11 meters, or about 36 feet. The university says the estimate is corroborated by mosasaur bones previously found in North Dakota. This is an estimate, not a direct measurement of a complete skeleton. Researcher Melanie During, as quoted in the university’s account, said an animal at that size would rival the largest killer whales and would have been an extraordinary predator in a river environment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What this finding does—and does not—mean
- It supports freshwater habitation. The central tooth’s multi-proxy isotope evidence and similar results from two nearby teeth point to freshwater conditions.
- It does not make all mosasaurs river animals. The evidence concerns a limited group of teeth from North Dakota, not mosasaurs everywhere.
- It does not reveal a precise behavioral story. The isotope findings do not establish exactly where the animal traveled, what it hunted or how long it remained in any particular river.
The striking result is not simply that a marine reptile fossil turned up in a river deposit: its chemical signature is consistent with the animal having inhabited freshwater near the end of the Cretaceous.
