The largest reported dinosaur footprints on Western Australia’s Dampier Peninsula are about 1.7 metres long—large enough for most people to fit inside one. The prints are trace fossils, not dinosaur body measurements: palaeontologist Steve Salisbury estimated that the giant sauropods that made them stood roughly 5.3 to 5.5 metres at the hip. The tracks are about 130 million years old, and their story is inseparable from Goolarabooloo Traditional Custodians and their connection to the land.
How large were the footprints?
Several tracks attributed to giant sauropods measure about 1.7 metres long, according to The Guardian’s 2017 reporting. Salisbury said most people could fit inside tracks that size. The phrase “swallow a human in one step” is a figurative way of describing the scale; a footprint is not evidence that an animal could swallow a person.
The estimated hip height of 5.3 to 5.5 metres is an inference from the tracks, not a direct measurement of a skeleton. The prints preserve where animals walked and clues about their movement; they do not preserve a complete body.
Where are the tracks, and how old are they?
The track assemblage lies along the Kimberley shoreline of Western Australia’s Dampier Peninsula, including the area known as Walmadany. The footprints date to about 130 million years ago, when the landscape included a river delta, according to The Guardian and Guinness World Records.

What else did researchers find?
The coastline holds thousands of tracks. In its 2017 account, National Geographic reported that researchers spent more than 400 hours surveying and documenting the area. Of the tracks reported, 150 were confidently assigned to 21 different track types. That variety points to a diverse dinosaur assemblage, rather than a site defined only by its largest prints.
The largest individual footprint is a different claim from having the most varied tracksite or the longest trackway. Guinness World Records lists a 1.7-metre print as the largest known dinosaur footprint; the 2017 reporting also describes the Dampier Peninsula tracks as among the largest known. The record concerns footprint length, not the size of a whole trackway.

Why are the tracks important to Goolarabooloo people?
Goolarabooloo Traditional Custodians knew the tracks and incorporated them into cultural traditions. Their knowledge and custodianship are part of the site’s history, not an addition to a story that begins with scientific study. National Geographic quoted Goolarabooloo Law Boss Phillip Roe explaining the role of Marala, the Lawgiver: “He gave country the rules we need to follow. How to behave, to keep things in balance.”
Concern over a proposed liquefied natural gas facility helped prompt formal study and wider attention to the area. National Geographic reported that Walmadany received Natural Heritage status in 2011 and that the project later folded. The site’s protection and interpretation therefore involve both its scientific significance and its importance to the people who hold cultural responsibilities for Country.

Can visitors see the footprints?
Some tracks are exposed only at low tide, and visitor access arrangements should not be assumed. They can depend on community approval, and current guidance should come from the relevant Traditional Custodians or official local heritage sources. The 2017 reporting establishes the tidal constraint; it does not provide a current visitor schedule or permission to enter.
