A trail camera in Thailand’s Khao Luang National Park recorded an Asian golden cat (Catopuma temminckii), with the video reported as dated June 20, 2025. The clip is a rare appearance, but the available reporting does not establish that it was the first sighting after a defined period without records.
What cat was filmed, and where?
The animal was identified in news coverage as an Asian golden cat, a medium-sized wild cat whose coat can be golden or reddish-brown, but also dark brown, gray, melanistic, or spotted. Its name does not mean every individual has a gold-colored coat. The footage came from a trail camera in Khao Luang National Park, Thailand. The Miami Herald reported that the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation’s video was dated June 20, 2025. Miami Herald, July 8, 2025
Was this the first sighting in years?
That claim is not established by the available reporting. Calling the clip a rare appearance is supported; confirming a first sighting after years of silence would require park monitoring records that define the survey period and show when earlier records were last obtained. A camera-trap clip can document an animal passing a camera, but this report alone does not prove a local breeding population or establish a precise gap in sightings.
How camera-trap footage works
A trail camera, also called a remote or motion-activated camera, records animals when they pass its sensor. The method helps researchers document elusive wildlife without a person continuously present. The camera brand and model used for this Asian golden cat clip have not been identified in the reporting. Panthera describes its remote cameras as tools for wildlife research; its Thailand work confirming flat-headed cats was a separate project and a different species. Is the Asian golden cat endangered?
The IUCN SSC Cat Specialist Group lists the Asian golden cat as Vulnerable. Its profile cites evidence of population and range declines over 2003–2022, while emphasizing substantial data uncertainty. The cat is closely associated with closed-canopy forest, although records also come from tropical, subtropical, subalpine, and degraded forests. Threats include habitat loss and degradation related to agriculture, logging, mining, and infrastructure, as well as illegal hunting, trade in pelts and bones, and indiscriminate snaring. The specialist group notes that these threats remain poorly understood because the species has received limited research attention. IUCN SSC Cat Specialist Group species profile
How many Asian golden cats remain?
There is no reliable global population count. The IUCN SSC Cat Specialist Group’s profile, accessed in 2026, gives a rough estimate of around 7,000 mature individuals, with a broad possible range of 1,000 to 12,000. This is an uncertain estimate, not a census. The group also notes that the species is more widely distributed in Thailand than in some other countries within its range.

Do not confuse this footage with Thailand’s flat-headed cat rediscovery
Thailand’s separate flat-headed cat (Prionailurus planiceps) detections in the To Daeng peat swamp are not records of the Asian golden cat in Khao Luang. Thailand’s Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning reported detections in 2024 and 2025, including a female with a cub; Panthera also covered that different confirmation. Those records cannot establish the golden cat clip’s sighting history. Thailand ONEP release, January 2, 2026
