A newly described Ethiopian shrew, Crocidura stanleyi, weighs about 3 grams, with a body around 5 centimeters long and a tail around 3 centimeters. It is among the tiniest mammals, but its status as a new species rests on more than its size: researchers compared genetic evidence and physical traits from specimens collected years apart.
What is the tiny new mammal found in Ethiopia?
Crocidura stanleyi is a white-toothed shrew in the genus Crocidura. It is not a mouse or a rodent. The species was described from the Ethiopian highlands in a 2025 study, “Integrative taxonomic revision of endemic dwarf shrews from the Ethiopian Highlands,” by Evan W. Craig and colleagues. Masaryk University’s publication record summarizes the study’s use of genetic and anatomical evidence.
How small is Crocidura stanleyi?
The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) reports approximate measurements of about 3 grams in weight, a 5-centimeter body, and a 3-centimeter tail in its January 8, 2026 account. SLU compares its reported mass with Sweden’s smallest mammal, the Eurasian pygmy shrew (Sorex minutissimus), at 1.2–3 grams. That comparison gives a sense of scale; it does not establish a comprehensive global ranking or prove that C. stanleyi is the world’s smallest mammal.
How did researchers identify it as a new species?
The case combined recent and historical specimens with genetic and physical comparisons. The 2025 publication record describes genome skimming, Illumina sequencing and cytochrome-b phylogenetic analysis, alongside examination of external and craniodental morphology—the form of the skull and teeth. The newly collected form was identified as a distinct genetic lineage with corresponding physical differences, including tail length and cranial features.

That distinction matters: small size alone would not establish a separate species. Researchers compared multiple kinds of evidence to determine that the shrew was not simply a known tiny species with an unusual appearance.
When and where were the shrews found?
The discovery story spans two field episodes, rather than beginning with a single 2023 find. SLU’s January 2026 account says Bill Stanley captured an earlier tiny shrew in the Simien Mountains in 2015. In 2023, SLU researcher Yonas Meheretu captured another on Mount Damota, at roughly 2,600 meters above sea level. Researchers had added a pitfall method intended to catch smaller and unexpected mammals. The later Mount Damota specimens supplied complementary evidence for comparison with the earlier material.

Meheretu recalled the 2023 moment: “I will never forget that moment. I called out to the others. The little shrew looked like something we had only seen once before.”
Why is it named after Bill Stanley?
The species name honors Bill Stanley, whose 2015 Simien Mountains capture became part of the evidence behind its description. Stanley died before the work established the shrew’s identity. Naming the species after him recognizes the contribution of that earlier field specimen to the eventual identification.

Why does identifying this shrew matter?
Documenting an endemic species helps clarify the biodiversity of the Ethiopian highlands and gives researchers a basis for studying how wildlife adapts to high-elevation environments. Lead author Evan Craig said: “I thought, wow, what an exciting time to be a biologist. We are still living in an era where we get to enjoy the discovery of species, the most fundamental unit of biodiversity.”
SLU also says researchers plan to investigate whether this shrew and other small mammals sampled on Mount Damota carry zoonotic pathogens. That is a proposed research question; the account reports no pathogen finding, transmission evidence, or conclusion about risk to people.
