Eastern tree frogs (*Hyla orientalis*) sampled near areas heavily contaminated during the 1986 Chernobyl accident had darker dorsal skin than frogs sampled farther away. A 2022 study suggests historical radiation exposure may have favored dark pigmentation over generations, but it did not prove that radiation caused the pattern or that dark skin improves survival. The headline idea that individual frogs are “turning black” is shorthand for a difference between populations, not a rapid transformation observed in individual animals.
What the Chernobyl frog study found
In a study first published on 29 August 2022, Pablo Burraco and Germán Orizaola examined dorsal coloration in male Eastern tree frogs across a gradient of radioactive contamination in northern Ukraine. Frogs from localities closer to areas with high radiation at the time of the accident were darker. Frogs sampled inside the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone were darker overall than frogs sampled outside it.
By contrast, the study found that current radiation levels did not seem to explain the coloration pattern. The authors also reported no measured body-condition or oxidative-status cost associated with darker coloration in their sampled frogs, and their 48-hour experiment detected no short-term color shift. These results apply to the frogs and measures in that study; they do not show that every frog in the region is dark or that an individual quickly changed color after 1986. Did radiation turn the frogs black?
The evidence supports an association between darker pigmentation and proximity to places most contaminated around the time of the 1986 accident. It does not establish the causal steps. The authors propose that historical exposure may have favored darker coloration through natural selection: if pigmentation offered some advantage, frogs with darker skin could have left more descendants over generations. That is a plausible interpretation of the pattern, not a demonstrated mechanism or proof that dark frogs survived better.

- IMAGINATION WITHOUT LIMITATION - Schleich toys come in all shapes and sizes to bring every story to life. We value sustainability which is why we have created diverse worlds of durable toys built-to-last that can be treasured for generations to come.
The distinction matters because historical contamination and the radiation measured at a site today are not interchangeable. The coloration study found that present-day levels did not appear to account for the pattern; it interpreted the geography of darker frogs in relation to contamination at the time of the accident.
Can melanin protect frogs from radiation?
The 2022 paper discusses possible ways melanin might buffer radiation-related damage, including proposed roles in neutralizing free radicals and reducing DNA damage. Those mechanisms make pigmentation a useful question for further research, but the study did not show that melanin caused the observed difference, quantify a protective effect in these frogs, or demonstrate a survival benefit.

Nor does the finding establish a human medical application. Chernobyl’s frogs are not proven to contain a “secret” that can be used as radiation treatment. The specific protective mechanisms and their evolutionary consequences remain open questions.
Are Chernobyl frogs still exposed to radiation?
Yes, exposure varied among frogs and locations in a separate field study; the results should not be mistaken for a finding that the area or every animal is radiation-free. The study’s figures describe 226 male Eastern tree frogs sampled at 12 Exclusion Zone localities during 2016–2018, not all frogs or current conditions everywhere.

| Measure | What the Scientific Reports study reported |
|---|---|
| Ambient dose rate at study sites | 0.07–32.40 µSv/h across the 12 localities |
| Total weighted absorbed dose rate in frogs with detectable activity | 0.01–39.35 µGy/h |
| Comparison with reference and screening levels | All sampled frogs were below the ICRP reference-frog level of 40 µGy/h; about 20% were above the ERICA screening dose rate of 10 µGy/h |
These measurements are from the study authors’ 2016–2018 sampling, published in 2021. Individual absorbed doses varied. At the more contaminated localities, internal exposure contributed more than external exposure, with strontium-90 in bone a major contributor. An ambient reading at a site does not reliably tell you the absorbed dose of an individual frog. See the exposure study in Scientific Reports.

A 2022 study of 19 Eastern tree frog populations reported no genetic erosion in the nuclear and mitochondrial markers it examined, and higher mitochondrial diversity in Exclusion Zone frogs than in comparison European populations. Its authors proposed an elevated mitochondrial mutation rate as one possible interpretation. That result is related evolutionary context, not evidence that radiation caused darker coloration or proof of the pigmentation study’s proposed mechanism.
