The “nightmare” fish in the footage is the barreleye, Macropinna microstoma, a small North Pacific fish with a transparent covering over its head. Its unusual eyes sit behind its face—and, contrary to the old assumption that they point permanently upward, they can rotate forward when it feeds.
What is the deep-sea fish with a transparent head?
It is the barreleye fish, Macropinna microstoma. Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) describes it as a North Pacific species. Its transparent head covering is a real anatomical feature, not an illusion caused by camera lighting. The footage associated with this story comes from older MBARI research; it does not show a species newly discovered in 2025.
Deep-sea video can reveal animals that people rarely encounter. NOAA Fisheries notes that some deep-ocean species have been seen only a handful of times, and that remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) help scientists explore these environments. That context explains why footage matters, but it does not establish that this particular fish had never been seen before. NOAA Fisheries’ overview of deep-sea exploration also describes cases where high-definition video contributed to species research.
Why does the barreleye look so uncanny?
The fish’s face can be misleading. The small indentations at the front of its head may look like eyes, but MBARI identifies them as olfactory organs. Its actual eyes are the green, tubular orbs behind the face, beneath the transparent covering. They are directed upward, helping the fish look for potential food above it.

The transparent covering lets the eyes remain visible, creating the impression that the fish has a see-through head. It is more precise to describe this as a transparent covering over the head than to say the eyes are simply “inside a transparent skull.”
Can the barreleye fish move its eyes?
Yes. MBARI reports that researchers showed in 2009 that barreleyes can rotate their eyes toward the front to see food while feeding. Before that finding, scientists thought the fish’s gaze was fixed upward. The ability to shift its gaze helps explain how an animal adapted to watch above itself can also look toward food in front of it.

How deep does a barreleye live?
MBARI places the barreleye in the mesopelagic, or twilight, zone at depths of 600–800 metres (2,000–2,600 feet). Its stated North Pacific range runs from the Bering Sea to Japan and Baja California. MBARI lists a maximum length of 15 centimetres (6 inches), making this an unusually small fish to inspire such dramatic images.
What does the barreleye eat?
MBARI lists zooplankton, crustaceans and siphonophores in its diet. Researchers think barreleyes may hover below siphonophore tentacles and steal food caught there. That is a proposed feeding strategy, not a complete, confirmed account of every meal.

What the footage does—and does not—show
The footage makes the fish’s transparent head and eye arrangement easier to understand, but dramatic descriptions such as “no human was meant to see” are storytelling, not a literal scientific conclusion. The video does not prove that the species was unknown, exceptionally rare or newly discovered. MBARI’s published species description also does not establish its population size, lifespan or reproduction, so those details should not be inferred from a striking encounter.
Some retellings suggest that the barreleye’s anatomy could inspire engineering. That is speculation rather than a documented engineering application in MBARI’s species information. The established story is compelling on its own: a real, small midwater fish has a transparent head covering and eyes that can change direction.
