Iberian killer whales have been pushing and striking boats, often targeting rudders, since at least 2020. The damage can disable a vessel, but scientists have not established why the whales do it or what they intend. The best current evidence describes a range of behavior, from apparent curiosity to agonistic interactions—not a proven campaign to sink boats.

What happens when Iberian orcas interact with boats?

The events involve the Iberian population of killer whales (Orcinus orca), in waters around the Iberian Peninsula. Reports date back at least to summer 2020. Whales have been observed pushing or striking vessels, often at the rudder; a damaged or broken rudder can leave a boat unable to navigate.

An international workshop report counted six boats sunk since 2021 as of its 2024 publication. That is a historical count, not a current total. The report describes interactions that can cause serious damage, but the word “attack” should not be taken as proof of predatory intent.

Why are orcas hitting boats?

The cause and purpose remain unresolved. A 2026 peer-reviewed study documented seven contact events involving a research vessel in southern Portugal between 2018 and 2025. Researchers identified 26 whales; eight made contact across five recognized matrilines, and six of those eight were juveniles. Feeding or foraging was observed during all seven encounters. The authors characterized behavior as variable, ranging from apparent curiosity to agonistic behavior.

The study also noted an event before broad official reports began and the participation of a newly observed individual. The authors interpret these observations as highlighting continued spread through social transmission. That may help explain how the behavior spreads among whales; it does not explain what originally caused it or establish that whales are copying one another with a particular intent.

TaylorMade 6" x 22" Boat Fender 4-Pack, White, Heavy-Duty Vinyl 6224PW
  • MARINE FENDER QUALITY — From Taylor Made, a trusted name in marine fenders with over 100 years of quality and innovation, this 4-pack gives boaters dependable hull protection for docking, mooring and rafting.
  • HEAVY-DUTY BOAT PROTECTION — Flexible marine-grade vinyl helps cushion impact for boats up to 25 ft long, making these fenders ideal for pontoons, bass boats, fishing boats and recreational craft.
  • RIBBED NON-ROLL DESIGN — Ribbed sides help reduce rolling and keep each boat bumper positioned against the hull for more consistent protection during docking, marina stays or changing water conditions.
  • VERSATILE TWIN-EYE FENDER — Twin-eye design allows vertical or horizontal hanging to match your docking setup, boat height and preferred fender placement; compatible with standard fender lines or rope, sold separately.
  • 4-PACK, NO ROPE INCLUDED — Includes four 6" x 22" boat fenders only, giving you broad side protection for common docking setups while clearly leaving rope choice to your boat, cleat and rail configuration.

So far, the observations do not prove that the behavior is revenge, play, defense, imitation, or an effort to sink boats. Those are possible interpretations people may propose, but none is established as the reason.

Where and when have interactions been reported?

Season and location matter. Spain’s latest cited update, published on April 1, 2026, reports on summer 2025: interactions generally declined across Spain, but increased slightly in Galicia and along the Cantabrian coast compared with 2024. They continued to decline in the Gulf of Cádiz–Strait of Gibraltar area. The update’s text does not give a numeric total, so these trends cannot be converted into counts from that source.

What should boaters do?

Spanish authorities advise checking the current ministry map and guidance when planning a route, avoiding mapped high-risk areas, and choosing a route closer to shore only when it is safe to do so. If you see or interact with orcas, report it to the nearest Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre on VHF channel 16 and provide details of the encounter.

  1. Before departure, consult the current Spanish ministry map and guidance and plan around mapped high-risk areas where practical.
  2. If an interaction occurs, follow official guidance to move away from the encounter area toward the coast in the Gulf of Cádiz or Strait of Gibraltar, or toward an area where rescue can be expedited.
  3. Alert Maritime Rescue promptly via VHF channel 16, giving the location and details of the encounter.

The 2024 workshop cautions that leaving may not stop an interaction or prevent damage: “Moving away is not guaranteed to end the interaction or prevent damage, but may reduce the latter’s likelihood.” It also advises against deterrents likely to harm whales or the environment. A marine VHF radio is communication equipment for contacting Maritime Rescue, not a deterrent or a way to prevent an interaction.

How does conservation affect the response?

The workshop report describes Iberian killer whales as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List and emphasizes avoiding measures likely to harm them. Spain’s ministry describes a conservation plan for the Strait of Gibraltar and Gulf of Cádiz population, along with satellite tagging and a pilot project intended to test ways of minimizing interactions with vessels.
