The flower most likely meant by “the giant flower that smells like flesh” is Rafflesia arnoldii, a plant native to Sumatra, Indonesia. A peer-reviewed assessment estimated that 60% of the 42 known species in the genus Rafflesia face severe extinction risk equivalent to Critically Endangered—but that is a genus-wide estimate, not an IUCN status for R. arnoldii. Kew lists R. arnoldii as Not Evaluated on the IUCN Red List.

What is the giant flower that smells like flesh?

It is most likely Rafflesia arnoldii, a species found in Sumatra’s tropical rainforest. Kew says it grows exclusively within vines in the genus Tetrastigma, making it a parasite dependent on a particular living host rather than a plant that grows as a typical leafy shrub. Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew: Rafflesia arnoldi.

The flower’s odor resembles rotten meat. Kew says the smell attracts flies and beetles that seek dead flesh; these insects help pollinate the plant. The scent is therefore part of its reproductive strategy, not merely an incidental feature.

Is Rafflesia in danger of dying out?

A peer-reviewed assessment of the genus estimated that 60% of its 42 known species face severe extinction risk equivalent to Critically Endangered. The estimate concerns Rafflesia as a genus; it does not mean that every species has been individually assessed or carries that formal Red List category. What that estimate says about Rafflesia arnoldii

Kew lists R. arnoldii as Not Evaluated on the IUCN Red List. “Not Evaluated” does not mean the species is safe; it means that the source does not establish an IUCN risk category for this particular species. It would be inaccurate to report the genus-wide estimate as proof that R. arnoldii itself is formally listed as Endangered or Critically Endangered.

Why species-specific assessments matter

Individual species can have different documented statuses. For example, a 2016 peer-reviewed description assessed the Philippine species Rafflesia consueloae as Critically Endangered under IUCN criteria. That assessment applies to R. consueloae, not to R. arnoldii or the whole genus. 2016 description of Rafflesia consueloae.

What puts Rafflesia at risk?

Loss and conversion of rainforest habitat

The peer-reviewed assessment identifies habitat conversion and destruction as conservation pressures. Because Rafflesia depends on host vines, protecting suitable rainforest means retaining the ecological relationships the plant needs, not just preserving a spot where a flower has been seen.

Tourism can help or harm, depending on how it is managed

Ecotourism can bring income and attention to conservation, but poorly managed visits can put pressure on vulnerable sites. Kew reports falling Rafflesia numbers in Indonesia in connection with ecotourism impacts. The assessment discusses tourism as both a potential source of revenue and a conservation complication, and recommends stronger habitat protection and local community action. Visitor access is not automatically beneficial or harmful: its effect depends on site management and the role local communities have in conservation. Why is Rafflesia so difficult to cultivate?

Kew says the plant’s specific requirements mean almost no botanical gardens have R. arnoldii in cultivation. Its exclusive relationship with Tetrastigma vines is central to that challenge: growing the flower is not simply a matter of providing ordinary potting soil and care. Its dependency also makes preserving intact habitat and host relationships especially important. Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Is Rafflesia the same as the titan arum?

No. Both plants are called “corpse flower” and are known for a smell like rotting flesh, but they are unrelated. They also differ in what is being called a flower: Rafflesia produces the world’s largest individual flower, while the titan arum’s towering display is an inflorescence—a cluster of flowers.
