But a reading from an ordinary fishing scale is only a personal estimate; it does not automatically count as an official record. Record programs set their own rules for scales, witnesses, measurements, and supporting evidence, so check the agency for the place where you caught the fish before submitting a claim.
How much does a trout weigh?
There is no single weight that applies to all trout. Species, age, and habitat differ, and the available official record listings do not establish a defensible average across trout. A record weight is an exceptional, jurisdiction-specific catch—not a typical trout size.
For context, Colorado Parks and Wildlife lists an 8.56-pound Brook Trout caught at Waterdog Lake in 2022, attributed to Matt Smiley (Colorado Parks and Wildlife record listings). North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission lists these state records:
| Species | Listed weight | Year and location | Angler |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rainbow trout | 20 pounds, 3 ounces | 2006, Horsepasture River | Leah Johnson |
| Brook trout | 7 pounds, 7 ounces | 1980, Raven Fork River | G. L. Marshall, Jr. |
| Brown trout | 24 pounds, 10 ounces | 1998, Nantahala River | Robert Lee Dyer |
These are record listings, not averages, and records can change. See the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission records for the agency’s listed figures.

How to weigh a trout for a personal estimate
A handheld fishing scale can give you a personal weight estimate. Follow the scale’s instructions and keep the fish supported securely while weighing it. If you may submit the result as a record, do not assume that your scale or weighing method qualifies: consult the responsible fish and wildlife agency first and follow its accepted scale and documentation requirements.
Official trout records: rules depend on the category and state
Record procedures are not a nationwide standard. Florida requires an agency-certified scale for state record weight. Its standards also specify total length and girth to the nearest quarter inch. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission states: “Weight shall be determined on a scale certified by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services” (Florida measurement standards).

Texas requires weight-record fish to be weighed on a certified or legal-for-trade scale within three days of the catch, with a witness. Its guidance also addresses photographs and species verification. For weight records, Texas describes measuring in a straight line from the snout to the tail tip, with the jaw closed and tail pinched (Texas Parks and Wildlife record fish program).
Texas separates catch-and-release records from weight records. For its catch-and-release category, weighing is optional; the record is determined by length (Texas catch-and-release records). Before pursuing a record, check the applicable rules for:

Weighing a trout you plan to release
Weighing is not necessary to release a trout. Minnesota DNR recommends landing the fish quickly, handling it gently, keeping it in the water as much as possible, and releasing it promptly. Needle-nosed pliers or forceps can help remove the hook (Minnesota DNR fish-handling guidance). Follow local fishing regulations as well as these handling recommendations.
