Child Designs a Wheelchair for a Bunny: Joe and the All Terrain Bunny Cart

Liam O’Rourke built the All Terrain Bunny for Joe, a rabbit who could not use his hind legs. The story is inspiring, but it is not a build plan or a universal guide to rabbit mobility carts.

A young Tucson resident named Liam O’Rourke designed and built a small mobility cart for Joe, a paraplegic baby rabbit. The 2011 account called it the “All Terrain Bunny” and reported that, after some adjustment, it seemed to improve Joe’s mobility. It is an encouraging story, not a tested plan or proof that one cart will suit every rabbit.

How Liam’s cart helped Joe

According to Make:’s May 5, 2011 account, the O’Rourke family found two rabbits in their yard around Easter and realized that Joe could not use his hind legs. After the family cared for the rabbits, Liam made a small cart for him, naming it the All Terrain Bunny (ATB). Make: describes it as a red wagon with yellow wheels.

Joe needed time to get used to the cart. The account says it ultimately seemed to improve his mobility, but gives no measured outcomes or veterinary evaluation. Joe and his brother later went to a wildlife rescue center.

What the story does—and does not—show

The ATB is a reported example of a child making a cart for one rabbit. The article does not provide dimensions, a materials list, or reproducible building instructions. It therefore cannot serve as a build plan or establish that the cart was safe or appropriate for other rabbits.

#1 Best Overall
Guinea Pig Wheelchair for Back Leg Mobility — Small Pet Wheelchair for Hind Leg Weakness, Paralysis & Recovery, Adjustable Harness, Includes 2 Wheel Sizes (2.3 in & 1.77 in), Fits 2-4 lbs
  • SEE YOUR PET WALK AGAIN — When your guinea pig or small pet develops hind leg weakness from old age, injury, or illness, it is heartbreaking to watch them struggle. This wheelchair restores their ability to explore, play, and get to their food and water dish independently — often within minutes of the first fitting. That first moment they roll across the floor on their own is everything
  • SNUG, COMFORTABLE, AND CHAFE-FREE — The padded adjustable harness wraps around your pet's chest and shoulders — not their sensitive belly or spine. Three adjustment points let you dial in a perfect fit for pets 2-4 lbs and up to 10 inches in body length
  • TWO WHEEL SETS FOR DIFFERENT SURFACES — Includes 2.3-inch wheels for carpet, rugs, and textured indoor surfaces, plus 1.77-inch wheels for hardwood, tile, and smooth floors. Both sets use smooth-rolling bearings that glide quietly so your pet isn't startled by noise or vibration
  • LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN — LESS THAN 2 OUNCES — Your pet already has mobility challenges; the last thing they need is a heavy device weighing them down. The entire wheelchair weighs less than 2 ounces — about the same as a AAA battery. Most pets adjust within the first hour of use
  • DESIGNED FOR GUINEA PIGS AND SIMILAR SMALL PETS — This wheelchair is specifically sized for guinea pigs, small rabbits, rats, and similarly sized pocket pets between 2-4 lbs. If your pet is outside this size range or has a different body shape, please message us before ordering — we will help you figure out the right solution

Other accounts illustrate different approaches, but do not establish a universal design. In a Best Friends Animal Society feature, a designer named Annie described a separate prototype made with PVC pipe, vet wrap, and wheels. She said, “I was very careful in the design to use lightweight materials and a lot of padding in order to prevent discomfort and the need to struggle to drag the cart around.” That is the designer’s account of her priorities, not evidence of clinical validation.

What to consider when looking for a rabbit mobility cart

Rabbit-specific options include adjustable products and custom carts, but the available sources do not show that any one model fits every rabbit. Compare the individual animal’s needs and the cart’s characteristics rather than treating the ATB or another prototype as a template.

Adjustable Pet Wheelchair Hind Leg Support Small Animal Mobility Cart
  • Adjustable Fit Design Adjustable structure supports different body sizes, allowing stable fit for small animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs during movement assistance.
  • Lightweight Frame Build Lightweight construction allows easy placement and handling, helping pets move with less restriction during indoor use and rehabilitation activities.
  • Small Animal Compatibility Suitable for rabbits, guinea pigs, and other similar small pets, providing a structured mobility support solution for various body shapes.
  • Secure Strap System Equipped with adjustable straps to help maintain positioning and provide consistent support during use without restricting natural posture.
  • Daily Support Application Suitable for everyday mobility assistance, recovery support, and controlled movement training scenarios for small animals needing rear limb assistance.
  • Fit and adjustability: Check whether the cart can be adjusted to the rabbit’s body and whether the seller gives sizing guidance. The seller listing for the RabbitRoamer V2 describes adjustments in length, width, and height and configurations for different rabbit sizes. The listing was marked sold out when retrieved; specifications and availability are seller claims that may change.
  • Weight and padding: A cart needs to be manageable for the rabbit to move in. The Best Friends account highlights lightweight materials and padding as design priorities, but does not provide independent performance testing.
  • Custom options: DisabledRabbits.com’s wheelchair information describes custom cart options and advises considering the rabbit’s needs and discussing timing with a veterinarian.
  • Professional guidance: Ask a veterinarian familiar with rabbits to assess the animal’s condition and whether a mobility device is appropriate before buying or building one. A cart story or seller description cannot replace an individual assessment.

Can you build a similar wheelchair?

The ATB article does not give enough information to reproduce Liam’s cart. PVC pipe, vet wrap, wheels, and padding appear in the separate Best Friends prototype account, but that account is not a validated recipe or a set of tested instructions. Do not assume that copying those materials will produce a safe fit; get veterinary input on the rabbit’s needs and the proposed device.

Rabbit owners do ask where to find custom help or buy a cart. A July 6, 2026 Reddit discussion uses the wording “Does anyone know someone who could make a custom wheelchair for him?” and asks for a website to buy one. The discussion is an example of that search, not clinical guidance; for an individual rabbit’s suitability, consult a rabbit-experienced veterinarian.
