That ended the emergency response structure—not bird flu monitoring. CDC continues to track human infections and monitor people exposed to infected animals.
Did the CDC end its bird flu response?
Yes. An unnamed Department of Health and Human Services spokesperson told Axios on July 7, 2025 that the response had been “deactivated to transition back to regular program activity” on July 2. The spokesperson cited declining animal infections and no human cases reported since February 2025.
CDC’s own current situation page says it streamlined its H5 updates with routine influenza reporting on July 7, 2025. CDC did not say H5N1 had disappeared, and the change did not mean all federal monitoring stopped.
Is CDC still monitoring bird flu?
Yes. CDC continues human influenza surveillance, reports human cases, and monitors people exposed to infected animals. Its October 2, 2026 surveillance update, covering data through September 26, 2026, says influenza surveillance systems showed no indicators of unusual influenza activity in people, including A(H5).

CDC says exposed people are monitored for 10 days. From February 2022 through September 26, 2026, it recorded at least 33,300 people monitored and at least 1,340 tested for novel influenza A. These are cumulative totals across that period, not current case counts or measures of the deactivation’s effects. CDC says monitoring and testing figures are reported monthly.
What does ending the emergency response mean?
The response’s emergency structure was deactivated, while human surveillance and routine reporting continued. CDC’s earlier description of its work included surveillance, contact tracing, genetic sequencing and characterization, monitoring exposed people, laboratory work, and preparedness; its later updates confirm ongoing human surveillance and exposure monitoring.

Is bird flu still a risk to people?
CDC’s March 6, 2026 situation page described A(H5) bird flu as widespread in wild birds worldwide, with outbreaks in poultry and U.S. dairy cows and sporadic human cases among U.S. dairy and poultry workers. CDC characterized the risk to the general public as low. That assessment is not the same as saying risk is identical for everyone: people whose work brings them into contact with infected animals have a different exposure context.

What should exposed workers and employers do?
CDC’s May 6, 2025 interim employer guidance calls for a site-specific hazard assessment and a workplace health and safety plan. It distinguishes low-, medium-, and high-exposure tasks and settings, with controls varying by the work involved.
Controls may include engineering measures, administrative measures, and personal protective equipment (PPE); combinations may be needed, and PPE must be used correctly. A single item of equipment is not a substitute for assessing hazards and following current employer, CDC, and OSHA guidance.
