The public announcement did not identify the patient or disclose their age, exact symptoms, the flock’s species or county, how long exposure lasted, the virus genotype, or the specific treatment provided. Those details should not be inferred from the limited case description. Iowa HHS’s December 20, 2024 announcement gives the publicly reported facts.
How did the person get bird flu?
Iowa HHS reported exposure while the person was working with an infected commercial poultry flock. The state said A(H5) can spread through prolonged exposure around infected flocks and herds, with the virus entering through the eyes, nose, or mouth. This documented animal exposure does not establish that the person acquired the infection from another person.

As of December 20, 2024, Iowa HHS said the CDC had recorded 64 confirmed U.S. human H5 HPAI cases across nine states. Most reported exposures were linked to infected poultry or dairy cows. The state also said there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission of influenza A(H5) occurring in the United States at that time; that statement describes the situation on the announcement date, not a timeless guarantee. Iowa HHS, December 20, 2024.
What did officials say about the wider risk?
The Iowa announcement is a dated account of one case and the national situation as of December 20, 2024. It should not be confused with later CDC reporting. In a situation summary dated March 6, 2026, CDC described A(H5) as widespread in wild birds worldwide, with outbreaks in poultry and U.S. dairy cows and sporadic human cases among U.S. dairy and poultry workers. CDC characterized the current public-health risk as low and reported 71 U.S. human A(H5) cases since February 2024. CDC’s situation summary.
The 64-case figure belongs to Iowa HHS’s December 2024 snapshot; the 71-case figure is CDC’s later total reported since February 2024, published in its March 2026 summary. Neither count changes what Iowa reported about this individual’s known exposure: it was linked to infected poultry.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should poultry workers do after exposure?
CDC guidance dated July 8, 2025 recommends monitoring for acute respiratory illness and conjunctivitis beginning after first exposure and continuing until 10 days after the last exposure. Possible symptoms include cough, sore throat, eye redness or discharge, fever or feeling feverish, runny nose, fatigue, muscle aches, joint pain, headache, and diarrhea. CDC’s guidance for people exposed to infected animals says testing decisions depend on the exposure and clinical or public-health criteria, and are handled through state or local public-health channels.

What did Iowa say about poultry, eggs, and milk?
In its December 20, 2024 release, Iowa HHS said there was no concern about the safety of eggs and poultry products or pasteurized milk and dairy products. The state reminded consumers to handle and cook eggs and poultry properly, including cooking them to an internal temperature of 165°F, and said pasteurization inactivates bacteria and viruses such as influenza in milk. These are statements from that dated release, not a new assessment made in 2026. Iowa HHS, December 20, 2024.
What Iowa officials said
Iowa HHS State Medical Director Dr. Robert Kruse said: “Iowa has monitored the spread of avian influenza closely since it was first detected in poultry in the state in 2022, and our state is prepared with the established knowledge, strong partnerships, and effective tools to mitigate its impact on our community.” Iowa HHS, December 20, 2024.
