Kansas officials confirmed the state’s first known detection of the invasive Asian longhorned tick (*Haemaphysalis longicornis*) in October 2025. It was found on a dog in Franklin County, identified by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), and confirmed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). That finding does not establish that the tick is widespread in Kansas. For pet owners, the practical steps are to use tick precautions, check pets after time outdoors, and ask a veterinarian about prevention or a suspected specimen.

What Kansas officials reported

A joint KDHE and Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) alert dated October 9, 2025, said the tick had been found on a dog in Franklin County the previous week. KDHE identified it and USDA confirmed the identification. The finding came through a veterinary-clinic surveillance pilot launched in 2024, in which participating clinics submit ticks found on animals for identification. The alert establishes a confirmed detection, not the size or extent of any Kansas population. KDHE and KDA’s Kansas alert

The October 2025 alert said USDA had reported detections in 21 states at that time. That is a historical count from the alert, not a current total; USDA’s page updated May 27, 2026, does not provide a comparable current state count. USDA APHIS: Asian longhorned tick

Why the tick worries animal-health officials

Asian longhorned ticks are invasive in the United States. A female can reproduce without mating, and large numbers can infest a single animal. USDA describes possible effects including stress, reduced growth and production, and severe blood loss. KDA says heavy infestations can cause blood loss and death in animals. KDA identifies *Theileria orientalis* Ikeda and babesiosis as field-confirmed cattle disease concerns, and says more research is needed on transmission to other species. These are animal-health concerns; they should not be taken as evidence that people in Kansas have become ill from this tick.

Can Asian longhorned ticks make people sick?

The human-health risk from Asian longhorned ticks found in the United States is not settled. CDC says these ticks have been found on people as well as pets, livestock, and wildlife, but appear less attracted to humans than familiar native ticks such as blacklegged, lone star, and American dog ticks. CDC says it is not yet known whether, or how often, ticks collected in the United States can transmit harmful pathogens to people and cause illness. CDC: About Asian longhorned ticks

How to protect yourself and your pet

Before and during outdoor activity

  • In grassy, brushy, or wooded areas, wear long pants tucked into socks and tuck your shirt into your pants.
  • Treat clothing and gear with permethrin, following the product label. Use an EPA-approved repellent such as DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus according to its label.

After time outdoors

  • Check your body carefully, including your waist, underarms, ears, belly button, backs of knees, and hair.
  • Check your pet, especially around the tail, legs, toes, ears, eyes, and collar.
  • Shower soon after leaving tick habitat. This can help remove unattached ticks and make attached ticks easier to find.
  • Ask your veterinarian which flea and tick preventive is appropriate for your pet.

These steps reduce exposure risk but do not guarantee that a tick will not attach. Kansas’s prevention advice is available in the state alert.

How to remove an attached tick

  1. Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible.
  2. Pull straight outward with steady pressure. Avoid twisting or crushing the tick.
  3. After removal, clean the bite area and your hands. If you have concerns about your pet or the bite, contact a veterinarian.

What to do if you find a possible Asian longhorned tick

Size or appearance alone cannot reliably confirm the species. KDA says nymphs can be as small as a sesame seed, while adult females may reach pea size after a blood meal. Ticks may occur in large numbers on animals and may swarm an area rather than attach at just one site. KDA tick guidance

If you find a suspicious tick on your pet, contact your veterinarian and follow its instructions for handling and identification. USDA advises sealing a suspected tick in a zip-top bag and giving it to a veterinarian; KDA says samples can be submitted in alcohol to the Kansas Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Follow the receiving veterinarian’s or laboratory’s directions for the sample. USDA APHIS KDA tick guidance

What livestock owners should discuss with a professional

USDA says regular tick treatments should be effective against Asian longhorned ticks, but product choice and use should be discussed with a veterinarian or agriculture extension agent. KDA also describes early-spring burning and brush clearing as pasture-management tools and advises consulting a veterinarian about treatment protocols. Do not use a livestock product or dose on a pet unless a veterinarian specifically directs it. USDA APHIS KDA tick guidance
