Seven walking leaf insect species were newly described in a 2023 scientific paper: Phyllium iyadaon, Phyllium samarense, Phyllium ortizi, Pulchriphyllium heracles, Pulchriphyllium delislei, Pulchriphyllium bhaskarai and Pulchriphyllium anangu. “New” means newly named in the scientific literature—not that the insects recently evolved or were necessarily encountered alive for the first time.
What are the seven newly described walking leaf species?
The species were described by Cumming and coauthors in a taxonomic research article published in ZooKeys in 2023. The names fall into two genera in the leaf-insect family Phylliidae:
- Phyllium iyadaon
- Phyllium samarense
- Phyllium ortizi
- Pulchriphyllium heracles
- Pulchriphyllium delislei
- Pulchriphyllium bhaskarai
- Pulchriphyllium anangu
The article appeared on 3 August 2023 in volume 1173 of ZooKeys, on pages 145–229. The journal record identifies it as a research article.
What does “new species” mean here?
In this story, “new” refers to formal scientific description and naming. Taxonomists may recognize and describe a species after examining specimens already held in collections; the publication date does not tell us when the insects evolved, or when a specimen was first collected.

The episode description associated with the paper says the researchers examined historical specimens and material loaned from collections around the world. That context helps explain how a species can be newly described without a dramatic discovery of a living insect in the field. The collection-history detail is reported by the episode description, rather than verified here against the full paper. The episode listing also gives the seven names.
What is known about the species individually?
The available source material establishes the names and the paper’s publication details, but does not establish each species’ range, diagnostic features, appearance or conservation status. Those details should not be inferred from the names or from the general resemblance that gives leaf insects their common name.
