AgriLabs Introduced a Custom Vaccine Option for Swine: What It Means for Herds

AgriLabs announced a custom swine vaccine option on May 18, 2017. The announcement described vaccines tailored to herd needs, but it does not establish that the same product, formulation, or terms remain available today. For producers, the lasting question is when a veterinarian might consider an autogenous vaccine—particularly when a commercial vaccine does not closely match a strain found in the herd.

What did AgriLabs announce?

On May 18, 2017, AgriLabs announced a custom vaccine option for swine veterinarians and producers. The company said the vaccines could include bacterins, viruses, or both, and described a new production facility and diagnostic laboratory with pathogen identification and sequencing capabilities. The announcement named porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) as an example of a disease involving strains that may be difficult for some manufacturers to grow.

AgriLabs presented proprietary production processes and ENABL—described in the announcement as a patented lipid/polymer matrix adjuvant—as differentiators. Its executive vice president, Sean O’Hare, said at the time: “Making custom vaccines for hard-to-grow virus strains has become a particular challenge in the industry, and our scientists have developed novel techniques to address that challenge.” This was the company’s description of its work, not independent evidence that its methods outperformed alternatives. National Hog Farmer’s 2017 announcement also quoted O’Hare saying the market had seen little innovation despite a growing number of companies; that, too, was his assessment at the time.

When should I consider a custom vaccine for my herd?

For swine influenza, Iowa State University’s Center for Food Security and Public Health says a custom, or autogenous, vaccine may be considered when commercial vaccine strains do not closely match the strain or strains detected in a herd. Influenza viruses can evolve, and a mismatch between circulating herd strains and vaccine strains may be one reason a vaccine does not protect pigs as hoped. The guidance is specific to swine influenza; it should not be treated as a universal protocol for every pathogen. See the university’s influenza vaccine selection brochure.

A custom vaccine is not an automatic next step after a disease problem. A herd veterinarian can assess diagnostic findings, the available commercial options, the practical value of pursuing a herd-specific formulation, and the evidence and labeling for any proposed product. Bimeda likewise describes custom vaccines as a possible veterinary tool when commercial vaccines are inadequate for new or uncommon strains, with use under veterinary direction in specified circumstances; its overview is a manufacturer summary, not the primary source for regulatory requirements. What happens before a herd-specific vaccine can be made?

In the Iowa State swine influenza example, the virus must first be isolated, and making the vaccine takes additional time. That means a custom option is not an immediate substitute for a vaccine already available. The brochure does not establish a standard production timeline, and the steps should not be assumed to be identical for every pathogen or vaccine type.

  1. Review the herd problem with the veterinarian. Discuss clinical history and diagnostic results, and whether a commercial vaccine is a reasonable match.
  2. Determine whether the relevant pathogen can be isolated and characterized. For the influenza example, Iowa State identifies virus isolation as a requirement.
  3. Ask about the product-specific process and timing. Manufacturing requires additional time in the influenza example; the actual process depends on the pathogen and provider.
  4. Review evidence, labeling, and applicable requirements before use. Confirm these for the specific product with the veterinarian and current primary documentation.

How does a custom vaccine compare with a commercial option?

Decision point Commercial vaccine Custom/autogenous vaccine
Strain fit Compare the strains represented in the product with the strain or strains found in the herd. May be considered for swine influenza when commercial strains do not closely match herd strains, according to Iowa State.
Diagnostic basis Use herd diagnostic findings to inform whether the product is a reasonable fit. The Iowa State influenza guidance says virus isolation is required.
Timing Does not require the additional custom-manufacturing step described in the Iowa State influenza example. Requires additional manufacturing time in that influenza example; no standard timeline is established by the cited guidance.

What is known about AgriLabs’ offering today?

Huvepharma’s January 2018 acquisition announcement said the transaction included AgriLabs’ custom vaccines business. Phibro’s current swine materials describe Tailor-Made autogenous vaccines, custom formulations and combinations, and products addressing bacterial and viral herd challenges. Phibro also states explicitly: “Potency and efficacy of autogenous biologics have not been established.” That qualification matters: the existence of a current category of service does not prove a particular formulation is effective or superior. The available information does not establish that AgriLabs’ exact 2017 product, ENABL formulation, manufacturing process, withdrawal period, or availability continues unchanged. The 2017 announcement’s claim of a 21-day withdrawal period applied to that offering as described then; it is not a general rule or confirmed current label. Verify any withdrawal period against current product labeling and regulatory documentation before making decisions about treated animals or food-chain timing.

Questions to take to your herd veterinarian

  • Which pathogen and strain have diagnostics identified, and how confident is that identification?
  • How closely do available commercial vaccine strains match the herd finding?
  • Can the pathogen be isolated and characterized for a custom option, and how long would production take?
  • What evidence and current labeling apply to the specific autogenous product under consideration?
  • What veterinary direction and applicable regulatory requirements govern its use?
