You can make a leather dog collar by measuring your dog’s neck, choosing a strap and compatible hardware, then cutting, punching, assembling, and finishing the leather. The finished collar is a safety-relevant item: use sound components, follow their instructions, inspect the attachment points, and check the fit on your dog before use.
Choose a kit or build from scratch
A prepared kit reduces the amount of leatherworking and sourcing involved. For example, Tandy Leather’s Dog Collar Kit includes pre-cut and pre-punched leather, hardware, and instructions. Its listing gives a medium size of 0.75 in × 18–21 in and a large size of 1 in × 22–25 in. Check the current listing and directions, and make sure the stated range suits your dog’s measured neck.
A from-scratch build offers more control over dimensions and materials, but you will need to obtain suitable leather, hardware, and tools separately. Abbey England’s collar guide outlines common components and tools; its instructions also advise appropriate training where needed for the safety of the pet and handler.
Measure your dog and plan the adjustment range
- Measure around your dog’s neck where the collar will sit, using a flexible tape measure.
- Use that measurement with the pattern or kit’s sizing directions to choose a finished adjustment range. The cited project materials establish neck measurement as the basis for sizing but do not specify a universal clearance allowance, so do not rely on a generic rule in place of the product’s directions.
- Before regular use, try the completed collar on your dog and check that it fits as intended across its adjustment holes. If the fit is uncertain, ask a qualified professional for guidance.
Gather leather, hardware, and tools
Leather
Abbey England recommends bridle butt leather for collars. Weaver Leather Supply’s tutorial uses 7/8 oz leather for a simple collar-and-lead project; it suggests heavier leather or adding a liner for a more heavy-duty collar for a larger dog. These are source-specific recommendations, not a universal thickness specification or a load-tested guarantee.

Hardware and fastening
Plan for a strap, a buckle, and a ring, with the buckle and ring sized to suit the strap and design. Abbey England lists a caveson buckle and cast saddle dees, and describes rivets, Chicago screws, or thread as fastening options. Weaver’s tutorial recommends Chicago screws or tubular rivets for larger collars. Neither source supplies comparative strength tests, so these suggestions should not be treated as proof that a particular fastener is suitable for every dog.
Tools
For a from-scratch collar, you will need a way to cut the strap and punch clean holes, plus tools suited to your chosen fastening method and edge finish. Abbey England names a strap cutter and edge tool, and recommends sharp punches to help avoid frayed edges. Use the instructions for your specific tools and hardware.

Make the collar
- Cut and prepare the strap. Follow your pattern’s dimensions and keep the cut edges clean. If you are working from a kit, use its pre-cut strap and instructions.
- Mark the buckle and adjustment holes. Lay out the buckle fold, ring position, and adjustment holes according to your pattern or kit. Check the planned adjustment range against the dog’s measurement before punching.
- Punch the holes. Use a sharp punch appropriate for the holes and components. Clean, correctly positioned holes help the hardware fit as intended; avoid forcing parts into openings that do not match their instructions.
- Attach the buckle and ring. Secure the components using the rivets, Chicago screws, or stitching method specified by your design and hardware instructions. Do not assume that a particular construction method has a known strength rating; the cited project guidance does not provide one.
- Finish the edges. Use an edge tool and finishing method appropriate to the leather and your project directions. Remove rough or frayed areas that could irritate the dog or compromise the finish.
- Inspect before fitting. Check the holes, folds, fasteners, buckle, and ring for poor alignment, looseness, sharp edges, or visible damage. Then fit the collar and verify its adjustment on the dog.
Make a safety-conscious choice
A collar’s suitability depends on its materials, dimensions, construction, hardware, and fit. The cited supplier guidance is practical making advice, not a standard or independent strength certification. If you are unsure how to select or install components, or how the collar should fit your dog, get appropriate hands-on guidance before relying on it.
