Australian surfer Kai McKenzie survived a shark attack at North Shore Beach near Port Macquarie on July 23, 2024. His severed leg washed ashore and was taken to hospital, but follow-up reporting said surgeons could not reattach it. In the immediate aftermath, doctors were still assessing whether reattachment might be possible.
What happened to Kai McKenzie?
McKenzie, 23 at the time, was surfing at North Shore Beach on New South Wales’ Mid North Coast when a shark attacked him. Contemporary reports described it as a suspected or assessed great white, about three metres long; the identification was based on photographs, rather than a firsthand scientific examination described in those reports. Global News reported on the attack, as did ABC News.
McKenzie fought the shark and made it back to shore on his surfboard. An off-duty police officer walking his dog used the dog’s leash as an improvised tourniquet while they waited for paramedics. NSW Ambulance acting duty operations officer Kirran Mowbray said, “He… essentially saved the man’s life until the paramedics got there,” according to Global News’ July 25 report.
McKenzie was taken to John Hunter Hospital. His leg washed ashore shortly after the attack, was recovered, and was transported to hospital as well.

Could surgeons reattach the leg?
Initially, doctors were to assess whether reattachment was possible. That early uncertainty was not the final outcome: follow-up reporting published July 29 said the leg could not be reattached. ABC News’ follow-up reported that reattachment was unsuccessful.
Whether a traumatically amputated limb can be reattached depends on the circumstances of the injury and the clinical assessment. In a July 25 interview, University of New South Wales orthopaedic surgery professor Ian Harris discussed the reattachment process and its longer-term effectiveness. What happened to the rescuer’s dog-leash tourniquet?
Reports describe the off-duty officer’s action as emergency assistance that helped control bleeding until paramedics arrived. It is part of the account of this rescue, not medical guidance: the incident reports do not provide instructions for treating severe bleeding or establish that an improvised dog-leash tourniquet is an appropriate method in other emergencies.
