MSC Meraviglia arrived at the Port of Brooklyn on May 4, 2024, with a dead sei whale caught across its bow. The whale was reported to be 44 feet (13 meters) long. A 50,000-pound weight was attributed to a marine scientist in separate reporting, rather than presented as a direct measurement. The circumstances of the whale’s death were not settled by the examination findings reported at the time.
What cruise ship arrived with a whale on its bow?
The ship was MSC Meraviglia, operated by MSC Cruises. It arrived in Brooklyn on Saturday, May 4, 2024, carrying the carcass of an endangered sei whale, according to the Associated Press, which cited NOAA Fisheries spokesperson Andrea Gomez. The AP reported the whale was 44 feet (13 meters) long. Associated Press report
Global News attributed a weight of 50,000 pounds to Robert A. DiGiovanni, chief scientist at the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society. That figure was expert-attributed reporting, not an independently verified measurement reported by the AP. Global News report
Did the cruise ship hit and kill the whale?
The findings reported in May 2024 did not establish whether the whale was alive when it was struck, or whether MSC Meraviglia caused its death. Global News reported that DiGiovanni considered the whale’s full stomach evidence it had likely been in good health, and inferred that the vessel probably killed it. The same report said it was too early to determine whether the whale had been struck before or after death; toxicology and life-history studies were still underway. Global News report

- From the enchanting Safari range of minatures
- Handfinished for a unique model
- Suitable for children aged three and over
Those are different levels of evidence: the carcass was found on the ship’s bow, injuries were observed during examination, and a scientist offered an interpretation. None of those facts, as reported, amounts to a final cause-of-death or responsibility determination. The available reporting described NOAA’s investigation as ongoing in May 2024 and does not establish a later final finding. NBC New York report
What did the examination find?
The carcass was moved to Sandy Hook, New Jersey, where the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society conducted a necropsy. MSC Cruises said it had immediately notified authorities; the relocation provided access to equipment for the examination. Associated Press report Global News report

These observations document injuries and internal findings, but by themselves do not show when the injuries occurred or establish the cause of death. Global News report
What kind of whale was it, and how large?
NOAA Fisheries identified the animal as an endangered sei whale. The AP reported its length as 44 feet (13 meters). The separate 50,000-pound estimate was attributed by Global News to DiGiovanni, so it should not be treated as a verified measurement. Associated Press report Global News report

Has a whale been found on a ship before?
NOAA’s historical large-whale ship-strike database includes past confirmed and possible strikes, including cases in which a whale carcass was found on a vessel’s bow. It provides examples of prior incidents, but it is not a complete count of strikes and does not establish how often whales are discovered this way today. NOAA large-whale ship-strike database
