A Spanish photographer, Ángel Garrido Hidalgo, photographed a pale Iberian lynx in the wild. News reports describe the animal as leucistic and call the sighting the first known record of its kind, but neither the individual diagnosis nor the “first” claim is independently confirmed by a scientific record identified here. The animal is a real wild cat—not a mythical creature.
What was photographed?
News coverage identifies the animal as an Iberian lynx photographed in Spain by Ángel Garrido Hidalgo. The Indian Defence Review reported that he first recorded it with a camera trap and later encountered it again. Euronews reported that the location was withheld to help protect the animal from poachers.
The reports describe the lynx as unusually pale and leucistic. They do not provide a veterinary or genetic assessment of this individual, so leucism should be treated as the reported explanation, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Is this the first white Iberian lynx ever recorded?
Some coverage presents the image as the first known record of a leucistic Iberian lynx in the wild. That is a reported novelty claim, not a definitive global first established by a scientific record identified here. The careful wording is “reported as the first known” rather than “the first ever.”

What is leucism, and how is it different from albinism?
Leucism is a partial or total loss of pigmentation. Euronews distinguishes it from albinism by noting that leucism does not affect the eyes, while albinism does. A pale coat alone, however, cannot establish which condition an individual animal has; confirmation would require an expert assessment.
How many Iberian lynx are there now?
Spain’s Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) reported that its 2025 coordinated census counted 2,663 Iberian lynx across Spain and Portugal. The ministry published the result on 5 June 2026. The count comprised 1,711 adults or subadults and 952 cubs.

MITECO’s previous census counted 2,401 animals in 2024—2,047 in Spain and 354 in Portugal. The ministry reported that the 2025 total was 10.9% higher year over year. These are census totals for the stated years, not a claim that every animal was individually observed at the same time.
What does the sighting mean for conservation?
The lynx’s recovery is substantial, but it is not a reason to treat its conservation as finished. WWF Spain reported in 2024 that the species had been reclassified on the IUCN Red List from Endangered to Vulnerable. Habitat connectivity and illegal killing remain concerns.

For historical perspective, National Geographic España’s 2025 interview with WWF Spain conservation program specialist Ignacio Jiménez recounted that fewer than 100 Iberian lynx remained when the recovery program began in 2002, and reported 2,021 in the 2023 census. MITECO’s 2025 census provides the newer population figure.

The reporting says a camera trap was used, but does not identify its make, model, lens, sensor, settings, or other equipment. The photograph therefore cannot support claims about a particular camera or prove that trail cameras make rare wildlife encounters likely. Camera traps can document animals moving through a monitored area; they do not guarantee a sighting.
