A 2026 commentary proposes another way to study the behavior: examine what rudder contact does, such as changing a boat’s movement or producing resistance and vibration. A separate field report describes varied behavior and says the cause and purpose remain unknown.
Are orcas attacking boats near Gibraltar?
Boats do experience close approaches and physical contact from orcas in the Strait of Gibraltar and nearby waters, and rudder contact can damage vessels. But “attack” implies an intention that researchers have not established. Orca Ibérica defines an interaction as one in which whales focus on a boat and approach, observe, or touch it; that description records behavior without claiming to know the whales’ motive (Orca Ibérica’s account and definitions).
The evidence supports a careful distinction: contact and damage are observable; the reason for them is not settled. A 2023 open letter from cetacean researchers described interactions ranging from no contact to severe vessel damage and said severe damage accounted for 20% of the interactions in the historical evidence it discussed. That is a figure from the letter’s evidence at the time, not a current damage rate. The letter also cautioned: “In the absence of further evidence, people should not assume they understand the animals’ motivations” (2023 open letter).
What the 2026 study says about play
The headline claim that orcas “aren’t striking boats for play” goes beyond what the new work establishes. Christian Frings’s commentary in Animal Cognition, published September 8, 2026, suggests an additional framework for investigating the interactions. It does not report a controlled test of the whales’ intentions or demonstrate that play is not involved. Frings states: “My claim is not that Iberian orca–boat interactions are already explained by action-effect approaches” (Frings’s 2026 commentary).

Action effects are a research question, not a proven motive
Rather than asking only what stimulus might trigger contact or how the behavior could spread socially, the commentary proposes examining the consequences of an action. A rudder can affect how a vessel moves, and contact may create resistance or vibration. Researchers could investigate whether features such as rudder shape, vessel speed, water flow, or vibration are associated with interactions. That approach may add to other explanations; it does not show that whales consciously seek a particular effect.
Play remains one interpretation, not a settled answer
A Spanish government-backed workshop summary published in 2024 said experts considered the interactions non-aggressive and more related to play or socialization than aggression. That was the workshop’s conclusion at the time, not proof that play explains every encounter. Later field observations still describe the purpose as unknown. The two accounts are best read together: play or social behavior has been proposed, while the available evidence does not establish a single explanation (Fundación Biodiversidad’s summary of Spanish guidance and workshop conclusions; Castro et al.’s 2026 field report).

What researchers observed in the 2026 field report
Castro and coauthors’ report, first published August 12, 2026, describes seven events involving a research vessel in southern Portugal between 2018 and 2025. Of 26 identified whales, eight interacted with the rigid-hulled inflatable boat: two adult females and six juveniles from five matrilines. Feeding or foraging was observed during each event, while underwater footage captured behavior ranging from curiosity to agonistic behavior (Castro et al., Marine Mammal Science).
The authors report that keeping the vessel stationary did not reliably reduce interaction intensity in these observations, while acceleration was followed by an apparent loss of interest. Those observations come from a small, specific sample involving one research vessel; they should not be treated as universal instructions for handling an encounter. Most importantly, the authors say the cause and purpose remain unknown.

How often have interactions been reported?
Orca Ibérica lists 52 interactions from July through November 2020, 197 in 2021, and 207 in 2022. These are historical counts reported by the project, not a verified, continuous count series through 2026. They should not be extended into a current trend or treated as a measure of how often boats are damaged (Orca Ibérica’s historical counts).
| Period | Interactions listed by Orca Ibérica |
|---|---|
| July–November 2020 | 52 |
| 2021 | 197 |
| 2022 | 207 |
What should sailors do during an interaction?
Spain’s MITECO and MITMA guidance, summarized by Fundación Biodiversidad, applies year-round and urges particular caution from April through August in the Gulf of Cádiz and Strait of Gibraltar. Follow current local instructions, since official advice may be updated.

- Easy to Use:The fenders are easy to inflate and deflate. Designed with reinforced eyelets on both ends, it can be hung with lines vertically or horizontally. Designed with vertical ribs, add protection strength.
- Well Protection:The boat fenders are ribbed on all sides to enhance strength and friction and resist wear and tear. Reinforced molded eyelets support the pontoon boat fenders to hang vertically or horizontally, strong enough to withstand everyday usage but soft enough to show no signs of wear.
- Easy Installation:Package includes four boat fenders, inflating needle, four ropes, and one hand pump. The fenders are easy to inflate and deflate. There are also four dock ropes for easy suspension.
- Easy to Storage:You can optionally deflate or inflate all parts, fitting perfectly under seats or inside storage compartments.
- Keep the vessel moving toward the coast and shallower water. Do not stop during an interaction. OceanCare’s account of the 2024 workshop mentions moving 2–3 km toward the coast or toward a place where rescue can be expedited, but explicitly says that moving away is not guaranteed to stop an interaction or prevent damage. Treat that distance as workshop-reported context, not a safety guarantee (OceanCare’s 2024 summary).
- Protect everyone aboard from moving parts. Keep people in protected positions and away from parts of the vessel that may move during contact.
- Do not use harmful deterrents. The official guidance warns against methods that may kill, harm, disturb, or cause discomfort to cetaceans. It also describes Spanish protections against disturbing them and restrictions on approaching them.
- Report the encounter. Notify the nearest Rescue Coordination Center by VHF channel 16 or a working channel, following the applicable local instructions.
Why the word “attack” can mislead
“Attack” is common shorthand in headlines and search queries, but it can make an unverified claim about intent sound like an observed fact. The 2024 Spanish workshop summary recommended against describing the interactions as aggressive and framed them as more related to play or socialization. The 2026 field report, meanwhile, records a range of behavior and says purpose is not understood. A precise description is that orcas interact with boats, sometimes making contact that can damage them; the motivation remains unresolved.
