The likely subject is the mimic octopus (Thaumoctopus mimicus), although the title alone does not identify an animal with certainty. This shallow-water octopus is known for changing its pattern, posture and movement to resemble other marine animals. Its repertoire is striking, but scientists have not settled what every conspicuous display—or its exact color pattern—does.
What animal is the master mimic?
Thaumoctopus mimicus was formally described by Mark D. Norman and F. G. Hochberg in 2005. They reported it primarily from the Indo-Malayan Archipelago, with records from New Caledonia through Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines; photographic records extended as far as the Red Sea.
It inhabits shallow soft-sediment areas, with the original description reporting a depth range of 0.5–7 metres. The octopus is active by day and forages for small fish and crustaceans. That setting matters: on an exposed sand flat, an octopus may need to move across open ground where staying still or matching the background is not enough.
How does the mimic octopus imitate other animals?
Its imitation involves more than a color change. The octopus can alter its body pattern, arrange its arms into different shapes and change how it moves. A commonly reported example is flounder-like swimming: it flattens its profile and moves in a way that resembles a fish gliding over the sand. Reports also describe displays resembling lionfish and sea snakes.

Smithsonian Ocean reported in October 2013 that the octopus had been known to impersonate more than 15 marine species. Treat that as an attributed reported count, not a definitive tally established by a single experiment: the 2008 field study by Roger T. Hanlon, Lou-Anne Conroy and John W. Forsythe referred to a reputation of up to 13, and sources may count or classify displays differently.
What does field research show about its flounder mimicry?
Hanlon, Conroy and Forsythe observed two octopus species foraging on open, featureless volcanic sand off North Sulawesi, Indonesia. Across five days, they analyzed nearly 500 episodes of commonly observed mimicry of a local flounder. Both species matched the flounders’ shape and swimming actions.

The researchers found that the octopuses used this conspicuous imitation when moving would otherwise give away their camouflage. In this context, flounder-like swimming was described as a primary defense: rather than simply disappearing against the sand, an octopus moving across it could look like an animal predators might overlook or avoid. The study concerns observed flounder mimicry by two species; it is not a count of every form attributed to T. mimicus.

These terms describe different possibilities. Camouflage usually means blending into the surroundings. Mimicry means resembling another animal, while disruptive coloration can make an animal’s outline harder to read. A warning display would signal that a predator should not attack. The observed flounder-like swimming is an example of resemblance used while moving, but the function of the octopus’s conspicuous pattern is less certain.

An evolutionary analysis by Huffard and colleagues in 2010 proposed that flatfish-like swimming evolved alongside very long arms among sand-dwelling octopuses. For T. mimicus, its pattern could contribute to resemblance, disruptive coloration or warning coloration; those possibilities are not interchangeable, and the evidence does not establish one as the sole explanation.
Smithsonian Magazine reported in 2010 that the bright pattern might warn predators that the octopus is unpalatable, while noting that this had not been confirmed. The article recounted an observation of a flounder spitting the octopus out after trying to eat it. That single anecdote does not show that the species is generally unpalatable or prove that its pattern functions as a warning.
