But fish do not share one universal blood-type chart, and the evidence does not show that they use the human A, B, AB and O system. Findings vary by species, population and the reactions researchers studied.
What does “blood type” mean in fish?
Red blood cells carry antigens: molecules that can be recognized by antibodies. Differences in those antigens, or in how blood reacts in laboratory tests, can distinguish one fish’s blood from another’s. Researchers have documented such variation both between fish species and among members of some species.
That broad use of “blood types” does not imply a single classification shared across fish. Studies have examined different species, antigens and reactions, and their results do not combine into one universal chart.
What studies have found
Differences within Pacific salmon species
A 1961 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service report identified red-cell antigen differences within four Pacific salmon species: sockeye, chinook, chum and pink salmon. It described seven antiserum specificities and at least eight antigenic composition patterns in the salmon cells tested. The report also found that some antigen frequencies differed among geographic races. Those figures describe the salmon examined, not a count of blood types for all fish. Read the report, Blood Types in Pacific Salmon.

Different transfusion responses among species
A 1987 comparative study examined transfusions involving 12 fish species from 10 genera. It reported long-lasting persistence of allogenic red blood cells in rainbow trout, slow rejection when trout received salmon cells, and acute rejection after transfusions involving goldfish, carp and tilapia cells. The authors described the responses as species-specific and related to broad taxonomic groups. These are experimental observations from the fish and conditions studied—not a clinical compatibility chart for other fish. Read the comparative study.
Limited observations in rays
A 2017 veterinary report covering whole-blood transfusions in seven cownose rays and one short-tail stingray noted that little was known about blood types and transfusions in elasmobranchs, the group that includes rays and sharks. The authors reported negative cross-matches between the conspecific animals tested and discussed their relevance to possible emergency transfusion. That small set of observations cannot establish compatibility for all rays, sharks or fish. Read the ray transfusion report.

Do fish have the same blood types as humans?
There is no basis in these findings for labeling fish blood as human A, B, AB or O. A 1969 freshwater catfish study used “A-like” for a red-cell agglutinogen based on particular laboratory reactions. That wording describes a resemblance in reactivity; it does not establish that catfish use the human ABO system. Read the catfish study.
A 2004 forensic study tested blood from eight fish species in mixed stains with human blood and reported that fish and human blood could be differentiated. Although its title refers to ABO-system antigens, the paper addresses forensic identification; it does not demonstrate that fish share human ABO blood types. Read the forensic study.

What this means for fish transfusions
Research into antigen differences and transfusion reactions is not enough to guide a transfusion for an individual fish. Compatibility depends on the species and the specific animals involved, and evidence for some groups remains sparse. The comparative fish study and the small ray report describe their own tested subjects; neither provides a universal rule for aquarium or veterinary care.
