Protect your Bengal cat by keeping its microchip registered with current contact details, maintaining recent photos and ownership records, and knowing whom to contact if it goes missing. A microchip helps identify a found cat; it does not physically prevent theft or, by itself, settle every ownership dispute. No reliable Bengal-specific theft rate is established here, so these precautions are useful without implying that Bengals face a higher statistical risk.
What a microchip can—and cannot—do
A microchip is a permanent identifier that can be read with a scanner. It helps connect a found cat to its keeper only if the chip number is registered and the registry has up-to-date contact details. Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service puts the limitation plainly: “An unregistered chip cannot be traced to an owner.” Read AVS guidance on microchipping.
A chip is not a GPS tracker, visible identification, or a physical barrier to someone taking a cat. Treat it as one part of a preparation plan, alongside photographs and records.
Prepare these records before you need them
Confirm the chip and registry details
- Ask your veterinarian to scan your cat and confirm the microchip number. Keep the number and any certificate in a secure, accessible record set.
- Check which database holds the registration and confirm that your name, phone number, email, and address are current. Update the record after a move or contact change, and check it periodically. GOV.UK advises: “You must make sure your pet’s microchip information is up to date.” See GOV.UK microchipping guidance.
- Use a qualified professional for implantation and follow the rules where you live. Singapore AVS recommends ISO-standard chips and says a licensed veterinarian should implant them; those are Singapore-specific recommendations, not universal legal rules. See Singapore AVS guidance.
Make a useful photo and description set
Take clear, recent images of your cat’s face, both sides, and full body. Include close views of distinctive markings and other identifying features. Keep the original files with their dates, and write a description that notes coat pattern, eye color, approximate age, and distinguishing marks. The National Animal Welfare Trust recommends keeping photographs from different angles and a written description. See NAWT’s lost-or-stolen cat advice.

Do not rely only on social-media posts as your photo archive. When sharing a missing-cat notice, include enough detail and a clear image to help people recognize your cat, but keep some distinctive details or documents back so you can verify a claimant.
Keep independent proof of ownership
Store these items together, with a secure backup:
- Microchip number and registration or transfer paperwork
- Purchase receipt, adoption paperwork, or rehoming contract
- Payment records, where available
- Vaccination certificates, veterinary history, and vet bills
- Recent photographs and your written description
NAWT specifically advises keeping chip details, vaccination certificates, registration documents, purchase receipts, rehoming contracts, and vet bills. NAWT’s checklist is here. Registry information supports identification and reunification, but do not assume that a registry entry alone conclusively establishes legal ownership in every dispute. Ownership rules and the evidence requested vary by jurisdiction.

Which preparation measure does what?
| Measure | What it helps with | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Microchip and current registry details | Connecting a scanned cat to the registered keeper | It does not prevent someone taking the cat, and stale or unregistered details can block contact. |
| Recent photos and written description | Recognition and communicating what the missing cat looks like | Photos help identify the cat visually but do not, alone, establish ownership. |
| Purchase, rehoming, veterinary, and registration records | Supporting an ownership claim or a reunification process | Which documents are sufficient depends on the circumstances and local rules. |
| Microchip cat flap | Allowing selected programmed cats to enter a home | It is household entry control, not an outdoor tracker or a guarantee against theft. |
Optional: limit which cats can enter through a cat flap
A microchip cat flap can be programmed to admit selected cats, which may help control access through that entry point. Cats Protection describes this use, but it does not claim that a flap prevents a person from taking a cat or protects a cat outdoors. See Cats Protection’s cat-flap advice. Check that a model fits your installation and is compatible with your cat’s chip before buying.
What to do if your Bengal goes missing or theft is suspected
Act promptly, keep a record of calls and reports, and do not confront a suspected thief or enter private property. Procedures differ by location; contact local authorities for case-specific steps.

- [Important Notes Must Read] - Note that if you purchase this product without confirming the format of your pet's microchip, it may not be recognized. So please confirm whether this product is compatible with your pet's microchip. This product only supports FDX-B/EMID microchips. It cannot recognize any other format of microchips. The number of FDX-B microchips is 15 digits. The number of EMID microchips is 10 digits.

- [Fast Response] - If you find that the product cannot be used after purchasing it, we will assist you in resolving the problem quickly.
- Contact the microchip registry. Ask it to mark your cat as missing and confirm that the contact details on file are correct.
- Report suspected theft to local police. Ask for a crime reference number if that is part of the local process. Keep messages, listings, photographs, and other evidence, and provide them to police.
- Contact local animal services and nearby animal-care organizations. Notify the animal warden or equivalent, veterinary clinics, shelters, and animal-welfare groups. NAWT and Cats Protection both recommend prompt contact with relevant services and vets. NAWT’s advice and Cats Protection’s missing-cat guidance provide further steps.
- Ask about relevant CCTV. Contact neighbors and nearby businesses that may have cameras covering the area or likely route. Do not trespass or try to obtain footage unlawfully.
- Share a clear notice. Include a recent photo, the location and time last seen, and a reliable way to contact you. Reserve some identifying details or documents to help verify a person who claims to have found the cat.
- Log updates. Record whom you contacted, when, reference numbers, and any leads so that you can follow up consistently.
Check the rules where you live
Microchip requirements and recovery procedures are jurisdiction-specific. GOV.UK says cats in England must be microchipped and registered by 20 weeks; the same page says microchipping is optional in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Check the official page for current requirements rather than applying England’s rule across the UK. GOV.UK: Get your dog or cat microchipped.
Requirements and ownership procedures may also differ outside the UK. For example, Agriculture Victoria says a veterinarian or shelter may require proof that a person is the lawful owner when reuniting a pet. That is Victoria-specific guidance, but it illustrates why keeping independent records can matter. See Agriculture Victoria’s guidance.
